Lots of great threads lately for slightly less popular calibers, even some esoteric stuff and some wildcats. Enjoy it all.
Certainly a lot of debate of what caliber is better vs another and opinions as to why, again, enjoy and learn from it all.
No doubt some calibers offer better parameters over others for certain applications.
One of the "luxuries" hunters seem to have for off the beaten path calibers is they generally don't shoot anywhere near as much as other types of shooters so they can choose something different and it won't be quite as expensive.
There's no doubt the incredible popularity of .308 is due to military adoption, won't argue that but the if they had chosen something like the 280AI it would become just as "boring" given enough time.
But that's also why some of us like the .308 so much. Bullet variety is amazing, more load data than pretty much any other, off the shelf availability, many companies loading match rounds for it, incredible track record in the field, its not a barrel burner, and when it comes right down to it you can do pretty much whatever needs accomplished with the exception of very long range but that applies to most other calibers as well.
Most of my stuff is .308 .... ranging from a GA Precision "business" rifle, modded Remington LTR (backup "business" rifle), pair of tricked out Rem. 600 Mohawk hunting rifles, couple of way too modified (read money pit) short M14's, next up are a DPMS Recon 2 and in the not too distant future an ultralight (most likely a Kimber Adirondack).
.308 is not perfect but it works, and works well for about 95% of what most will ever need to do.
Might be lowly and boring but the .308 is great. Sometimes its just about getting the job done. So I figured it was time to give the .308 a bit of the love it deserves.
All hail the "boring" .308 !!
