love for the lowly boring .308

Lots of great threads lately for slightly less popular calibers, even some esoteric stuff and some wildcats. Enjoy it all.

Certainly a lot of debate of what caliber is better vs another and opinions as to why, again, enjoy and learn from it all.

No doubt some calibers offer better parameters over others for certain applications.

One of the "luxuries" hunters seem to have for off the beaten path calibers is they generally don't shoot anywhere near as much as other types of shooters so they can choose something different and it won't be quite as expensive.

There's no doubt the incredible popularity of .308 is due to military adoption, won't argue that but the if they had chosen something like the 280AI it would become just as "boring" given enough time.

But that's also why some of us like the .308 so much. Bullet variety is amazing, more load data than pretty much any other, off the shelf availability, many companies loading match rounds for it, incredible track record in the field, its not a barrel burner, and when it comes right down to it you can do pretty much whatever needs accomplished with the exception of very long range but that applies to most other calibers as well.

Most of my stuff is .308 .... ranging from a GA Precision "business" rifle, modded Remington LTR (backup "business" rifle), pair of tricked out Rem. 600 Mohawk hunting rifles, couple of way too modified (read money pit) short M14's, next up are a DPMS Recon 2 and in the not too distant future an ultralight (most likely a Kimber Adirondack).

.308 is not perfect but it works, and works well for about 95% of what most will ever need to do.

Might be lowly and boring but the .308 is great. Sometimes its just about getting the job done. So I figured it was time to give the .308 a bit of the love it deserves.

All hail the "boring" .308 !!

Most of my rifles are chambered for calibers based on the .308 case... my favorite three are .243/.308/.358... I have a few rifles chambered for calibers of the X57 family and a few from the /06 family... and that is my order of preference... as I downsize my collection, the last to go will be the -08's.

.308 might be boring, but trying to get longer ranges with tight groupings is always a challenge. When something is tried and true it will always seem boring. That leads me to experiment with different weights and powder combinations to stretch it out and still hit my targets. It may have been around for quite some time, but why reinvent the wheel..... Just find it a different use.....

Boring is right! The Bic lighters of calibre.

The Bic Lighter...a great analogy. It's arguably the most famous lighter in the world and has also taken as many lives as it's probably saved. And yet is famous through out the globe with a portfolio worth billions!

All hail the Bic! And the .308!! :D

My Fals used to love it...(they still do, just their on a diet)
Had a Rem 7400 that loved it...
Now my AIA M10 chews through it..

Its one of my 'top four' go-to calibers.

Yes, the 308 Winchester....truly a very, very popular chambering that could be called a bit of an over-achiever.

And despite that, I personally have never been able to find a real soft spot in my heart for it.
I've shot several head of game with it, including 2 or 3 moose, and it is quite capable.

But the 5 or 6 - 308 rifles I have owned never stayed long in my safe, soon moving on to someone with a bit more
appreciation for it.

It is almost as good as the 30-06, but cannot equal it, particularly as bullet weight increases. That is probably why
I still favor the 100+ year old codger, lol.

No question that the 308 is good stuff, just not my bag of beans. :)

Regards, Dave.

I'd say .308 might be boring to some, but 30-06 is for people who don't even bother learning what people mean by "other calibers"

Just to set the record straight, I have rifles chambered in at least 25 different flavors, so I definitely know what "other calibers" are all about. :)

Dave.

I've never actually owned a .308 and recently decided I have to have one so I'm having one built on a model 70 action. I'm excited to start developing loads for it. Being a huge fan of lighter calibers ( 6.5 X55 for one) I have absolutely no qualms at all about taking game with this great caliber.
