Gopher talk

Today's body count 381. Hot weather didn't keep them down. Love my Chair pod, could use an umbrella though, sweat my arse off, gophers kept on popping up, the place was crawling with them.

Slow in the pasture today. Body count only 119. Farmer is pretty happy though, that's 600+ out of his place. On the plus side, a neighbor of his came to chat, gave me contact info on more land with a gopher problem.

Slow day for me in the pasture, and working the boundary between pasture/crop... Only 47 for the day, but it was a special kind of awesome anyway.

Got to play with a "new to me" 1975 Browning SA-22 I picked up at auction a couple of weeks ago. Sweet little shooter. Reminds me I shouldn't really try to hit gophers past about 25 yards or so with iron sights, but, well, age gets us all sooner or later. Still a sweet little gun though.

I managed to pull off a nifty trick though. On the way "out" working the pasture, I popped a few gophers. On the way "back" I caught a Magpie chewing on one and not paying attention. Dirty little buggers have been hell on the chickadee and robin's nests this year, so Magpie's have become a designated "target of opportunity". They're way cadgey though, so I've only gotten a half dozen all told this year. I'm going to call this a "prairie double" and see if the phrase catches on (probably not, but I can try):

The other neat thing that happened today was there was a red-tailed hawk dogging me this evening. Perching on fence-posts about 50 yards off from me anytime I looked around. Sharp little customer that one. He waited until I served one up for him, then grabbed some easy fast food.

I got lucky on that shot. I had my phone out to try and catch a pic of him sitting on a fence post, when he swooped off and skimmed the ground for a second before flying off. I didn't even realize the pic I had caught was of him carrying off one of my kills until I got home and brought the pic up on one of my big monitors.

I could try for years to get a pic like that intentionally, and fail.

Great way to spend Canada Day.

Just wanted to share :)
Savage 93r17 FVSR, the cheapo Tupperware stock was swapped out for a birch? Walnut? Stock.

We all like to share, grass looks long, gopher is just right, prefer wood to tupperware too. Only one?
Fassteel, the rig is a Caldwell Chair pod, bought at Cabelas, not cheap but sweet.
Three new properties today, one crop planted, too high. Second, unused pasture, somewhat overgrown, got 31. Third, honey hole, grass chewed down, gophers like a shooting gallery, kind of late in the day but got 69 in 1 1/2 hrs. stopped when the counter was at 100. Farmer says come again soon.

Well my brother in law has mentioned there are gophers terrorizing a field he has east of the house. I took a drive back in there and

So I spent an afternoon out there with my brother and another hour and a half myself and thinned them out.

Consider this an eviction notice. Paper targets? I might pop 3 rounds for sighting in but after that.........

Bender was that carnage from your evo scout? Nice shooting.

You couldn't show those over on rimfire central (don't know why). You could post 143 tiny crosses made from pop sickle sticks with flowers as not to disturb anyone. That is really an old boy's club with a strange attitude at times. "LOL"

Today it was the 452 FS and 452 Lux. Next time will be 455 FS and long stock Ultra. They're all great shooters.
Got my keyboard slapped over there for showing graphic pics. I think the thread was HP performance and modded ammo. Ran out of Waltz die ammo, it does work really well.

Just got a waltz die not long ago. What works best the target form insert or the hollow point. Haven't played with mine yet. You should get one of those "cnc" steel trigger guards for your 452's it is a nice piece.
Made by one of the gun nutz here. He is going to do them for 455's also.I'm also looking for a 17hmr varmint barrel for my 455 evo if you hear of one give me a shout.

Another 60 critters bite the dust today near Didsbury Ab. My pal and I took out my Stainless Savage Heavy Barrel .22 and my Marlin 795. The little cheap 795 just never fails to impress. We swapped rifles back and forth and 40 of the 60 critters were taken with the 795. Like I said earlier, I've owned about six 1022s over the years with non of them being very accurate but this inexpensive Marlin just keeps on keeping on. Slow learner but so glad I switched.

Great afternoon in the same pasture today. Body count 128. Not done yet, farmer points to the south, same problem there. Ultra and 455 FS did the deed today.

I've been opening up the 555 about 30%

So...Waltz is the way to go? Did you guys consider the Paco Kelly kit? Looks like the Waltz is easier to get consistent results with, but I haven't tried either one. Need something to do over this coming winter...to prep for spring gophers next year. Going to be a Loooonnngggg wait.
