So I've got my first handgun on order, 9mm Sam 1911 GI from wolverine. So being new to handguns and to 1911's I was wondering what the do's and don'ts are. Anything I should or shouldn't do and why. Thanks everyone.
 
Id say just get use/comfortable working and manipulaing the firearm without ammo of course to start. Like working the slide, safeties , mag release in a safe manner. Then get to shooting it. Stick to the basics. Dont worry about upgrades for a while until you are used to it. Changing grips is no big deal, cheap way to make it more comfortable.

I plan on shooting it a lot. Already have 250 rounds waiting for it and I haven't even received the pistol yet.
 
Practice picking up your sight picture quickly at home with lots of dry fires. Snap caps are a good practice aid so you can practice chambering. It's not great for a 1911 to drop the slide without a round being chambered. Look for bulk ammo deals when venders have sales. I usually get 2000-3000 when there is a deal on.

Series 80 have additional components in them to safeguard against discharge if the loaded and cocked 1911 pistol was dropped. Some claim it makes the trigger feel worse than the Series 70 and harder to tune. AFAIK SAM pistols are a Series 70 design.

Oh ok. I don't plan on dropping it anytime soon so that's good that it's a 70. Plus we can't carry here so that's of no real concern for the most part.

Your first 1911 (and perhaps every one thereafter) ought to have been a .45. :p

Tell your buddy to load you up some big girl ammo and not the mouse fart stuff ;)



Do's and don't's.... Don't waste money on farkles until you're familiar enough with your pistol to know why you don't need them.

I have three..two in 45acp and one in 22lr
pics would be nice of your new puchase
what lube are you gonna use?
so far I like frog lube on my blued guns and I'm trying out something new that I came across by accident..but haven't been to range to test it out..on my chrome one..
I'd pick up a gsg 1911 as a plinker plus it's so much cheaper..
only thing is the gsg 1911 only comes with one mag so order a couple when and if you buy one and look into the tune up kit for it aswell
in one of my other posts canadain guy on youtube shows alot about 1911 take down and the other scratch you may get depending on finish
where you gonna shoot when you get it?

I don't have it yet still waiting on the transfer. It's taking for ever. I haven't thought about lube yet..where would one get frog lube? And I'm probly going to get a .45 next.
