Is it Unlawful to carry a firearm for self defence in the woods in B.C.?

Question not about hunting but hiking in the wood. As far I understand from the discussion I am allowed to have NR firearm with me while on the hike (not in provincial parks)
BTW, I have question, how they make animals not atack people in provincial parks?

When was the last time someone got attacked in a park? Or not in a park? There are more incidents happening in Coquitlam and Port Moody where you can't carry a gun anyway and they usually involve a dog.

The fact is that thousands and thousands of unarmed outdoor recreation enthusiasts enjoy wilderness hiking, camping and mountaineering in BC every year in parks and outside of parks. It seems like only gun nuts don't know how to do it without a firearm. I'm guilty of it too.

Hey, I know, this is a gun nut site. That's why we're here, and saying that is like going to an ATV site and saying "what's wrong with you guys, ain't you got legs?"

But to be honest I'm more afraid of a nervous nelly with a gun than a wild animal.

Did you hear of the guy who was shot by his buddy in their shared tent because he thought he heard a "bear"?

I guess you missed the guy dragged from his campsite in Mackenzie and killed by a bear? or the guy dragged from his ATV in ontartio just this past week?

It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

If you don't want to be prepared for it that's fine im ok with your choice to leave yourself unprepared, i back you up with your choice 100%. I choose to be prepared and hope you will extend me the same understanding I am extending you by backing you up with your choice, and hope you can understand why i choose to be prepared.

Ummm... Yeah. Great job. Seriously. No hunting license of any kind required. In BC.

And explain that one to the CO when ytour deep in the bush during a Legal Hunting Season....
Seems the Wiseguy is a wise guy , but what do I know.
Take the CORE course if for nothing at all but to learn a few facts about guns totting hunters in the Province in which you reside.
Rifter , your points are valid and you missed the other example out side of Fort Mac last year where the female crew member was stalked and killed in front of her co-workers.
Being prepared doesnt mean carrying a gun and ammo, but there are another multi-tude of things to consider.

Exactly. I'm usually prepared, even on a summer trip out of hunting season. In fact I bought a 2nd hand barrel for my 870 to make a 19-inch "camp gun " out of it [haven't ever taken it out of the house) but most people aren't armed and still enjoy their outings. That's all I was saying.

A couple times passing through, I've stopped to enjoy the Liard Hotsprings up north .... It's a great place to relax, but it's also a grim reminder of black bear that attacked and killed people at that spot some years ago. Many people stop there without any issues year after year, but you are in the wild and anything can happen. As I remember it, I believe a trucker had to run back to his truck to grab a rifle to stop the bear that had attacked like a half dozen people and killed someone. I'm sure the exact details could be found with Google. Although rare, things do happen with dangerous critters.

Yr not going to get #### for packing a shotgun around when hiking, if your licensed and its unloaded. Put a Cpl shells in pocket or where easily accessible , if that need should come up. If your running around shooting the place up and being a jackass then yeah..... watch out for Mr CO or Constable Seizure lol

I carry a big knife in places I can't walk around with guns. (mostly when hiking), I figure even a 2% chance against a big critter with my own "Claw" is better than dying with certainty.

Never been in a car accident but always wear my seatbelt(even if it wasn't law), never been in a motorcycle accident but always wear my helmet, never had a house fire but still have smoke alarms and never been attacked by a wild animal but still carry a firearm.

Man, that story brings back memories...
It was just after C-68 came into effect? and I heard that it was an american tourist that ran back to his truck to get his smuggled AR...

Stuff like that is rare, but it does happen. It's foolish not to have some means of defence, the bear doesn't care if you respect it. You (and everything else) are a potential meal.

EDIT: Hell of a story. http://www.nnsl.com/frames/newspapers/1997-08/aug22_97bear.html

Might as well carry a big stick then, because they are both exactly the same thing at that point: a club.

Absolutely no laws in BC against carrying a loaded firearm on Crown land at any time of year. No laws against shooting any target you feel inclined either, be it a rock, or a stump, or a leaf, or a beer can. Just clean up your trash, and enjoy your day.
