New Tavor Bipod From Fab Defense: The Podium

I honestly like the idea and had been planning on building something myself, but I honestly hate how it mounts forward of the handguard.

That bipod is lame. Use a front bag for bench. Or change out the front guard and use a real bipod. For prone the Tavor is pretty easy to shoot as is. Use the mag as a monopod. Put your support hand under the pistol grip if you need to. The balance is rearward anyways. TVpresspass you aren't recommending that thing are you?

What if you're shooting in a place where that's not practical, coyote hunting etc?

Or change out the front guard and use a real bipod.

And you can both mess up the rifle's balance and make the already small handguard extremely awkward to use when not shooting prone by taking up all the handguard space with a significantly larger, heavier bipod placed further to the front?

I've tried this and it's one of the more unstable, awkward holds I've come across. You're better off with traditional prone, holding the entire rifle off the ground.

There's a point to the bipod and I get what it is. My only concern is how much it intereferes with the extremely stable "Israeli hold" when in any position but prone, and if the tradeoff is worth it.

I don't use a bipod with the Tavor. Frankly I've had no problem whatsoever shooting the Tavor prone using the method with your support hand partially under the trigger hand guard/pistol grip area and the majority of it holding the trigger guard. I find it very stable. I use the mag as a monopod with the back edge. If on grass I dig it in a tiny bit. I wouldn't want this firearm to be any higher up. In fact using 10 round mags and using the pistol grip area would likely be the best to keep the height down (I haven't tried this yet). But... I again like the 5/30 mags and using it as a monopod. In terms of balance etc, that trigger/hand guard is great for holding onto if you don't want to go with a full forward hold. For kneeling and even prone I generally prefer a more compact and easier to balance hold over the CQB forward hold or even a traditional hunter rifle hold.

I have had zero problems shooting the Tavor prone or any off hand position. I would personally never add a bipod to this firearm. In this case I would see that gimicky looking bipod making the rifle even higher up, which for me would completely screw everything up for shooting prone. If off the bench then use bags. For anything else, keep it simple. Maybe this new bipod is a North American invention of necessity? It is hitting the market after the popularity in the United States after all....

I found the problem. Don't use Pmags!!! Never been a fan of them myself. I like a mag that works in all my firearms. AR/Tavor/T97 etc. I use Stanag or usually the D&H mags. I really like the D&H ones. They sit at the right height for the prone hold described. The Pmags sit higher which causes this hold to suck as you're only just barely gripping the handguard with most of your hand under the guard/pistol grip. Yes not so stable. Try it with a STANAG mag. 100 times better.

So this bipod seems to be an invention for the North American market who just has to have pmags. I own two pmags that I use for mag change practice or just because they look cool. The 30 plus mags I have other than those two are D&H or STANAG from LMT etc that came with rifles. I highly recommend using those types of mags instead.

Haven't shot it yet! So definitely not recommending anything. But considering that I have tinkered with a bipod before, and this is definitely something weird and different, I'm curious to give it a try.

*where the heck is that old bipod Tavor photo now?*

At its inception, the Tavor was not built to be a static ranged platform. It's built for FISH & CHIPS. But embracing civilian sales means seeing use well outside the original intention. Because we like to tinker and make stuff. ;)

Ah, there we go. Here's how I've shot with a bipod in the past:

I lost pretty much all my grip space doing that! For a pretty minimal return.

I want to take baby out to the 500 yard gong. If I ever get my hands on one of these bipods I'll try a string with and without and see if there's any real difference in how I shoot.

As much as I like to see new products available for my Tavor, this one is pretty useless. The only time my Tavors see the bench, I'm sighting them in....the Tavor was never meant for prone or bench shooting, waste of time and money...

If I'm going prone, I'm shooting off my pack. However, most shots at coyotes are off of shooting sticks or I'm slung up offhand. Zero interest or need for this bipod, however, I'm guessing they're marketing it towards gear hogs rather than serious shooters. Each to their own.

Ohhh Geez! That traffic cone is in big trouble!! Laugh2

The reaction in the forums was almost the same when Magpul announced the AFG. Since the rule of cool seems to drive so much of the tactical aftermarket, I pay attention whenever someone puts out a product that looks a bit goofy. Usually, that means they focused on function, and the product is a solution to a problem (even one most shooters don't realize exists)

It may not be suited to every shooting position and hold style, but I'm guessing it does the job
