M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

Rodney - just like TonyBen, you're making it look too easy. Maybe we need to join the black rifle guys in their 1 MOA Challenge.

Hey Paul,
Will give it a try, nothing to lose but ammunition! Less than 1 inch for 5 times 5 shot groups though will have to get someone else to shoot my rifle!!

Finally got nice-isn a day at the range that wasn't too windy to do some load work-ups.

Hornady 168gr BTHP over 40.3grs of Benchmark in Federal cases with CCI 200 primers. Stoked I've got a couple good loads now. Gonna roll up a bunch and have a go at the challenge. Hopefully the fire conditions improve here as well and we can resume shooting out past 100 (range goes to 475yds :) )

Very nice!

What are the specs.on the rifle? I like the Hornady match 168 for the price and the accuracy also.

^ Thanks Rodney! The rifle is an '09 Norc that had a few tweaks at one of Thomas' clinics (barrel indexed, oprod guide aligned and peened then loctited in place). It's got an SAI muzzle brake, USGI gas system, USGI rear sights, NEA tactical mag and bolt releases, NM style oprod spring guide (can't remember the brand) sitting in a USGI fibreglass stock (that I stiffened with extra fibreglass in the forestock area) with a Sadlak bipod stud, Harris bipod and a Coyote M1A cheek riser. ARMS 18 mount with a Leupold Mark IV 3.5-10x40 M1 in ARMS 22 med rings.

Thanks Rugbydave,
Love my Norc also but had to replace the barrel to get rid of the horizontal stringing. Had over 2000 rounds through it before the upgrade with no malfunctions, for the price they can't be beat! Again great group, now get out there and make the challenge!! Cheers. Oh Yeah, and pics to share of the rifle?

I am very happy to report that the 1970s era Israeli sniper scope worked out pretty good at out to 665 meters the other day.

This is mounted on my ancient Polytech using the also ex-Israeli army mounting rings and bases. This single point mount is secured with blue locktite.

Yes! Very cool, any pics? Love to see possibilities of making one of mine look more original with proper scope from the era! Is there a model number on the scope? What power is it?

Unfortuneately this is the only available picture right now. I'm in camp and the rifle is at home.

As you can plainly observe, the mount and rings matches the rifle finish pretty much perfectly, and the rifle scope manufactured by Koor Industries of Asia(?) not so much. Whatever. I do like the windage knob being positioned on the left side so it does not interfere with ejected-fired casings. The scope is also mounted high enough that one can use the 200 meter iron sight, just in case one has to defend oneself in combat, with a failed scope still mounted. Another good idea I think.

The scope is the Nimrod fixed 6x42 with a pretty neat range finding reticle and several one meter lead hash marks @100 meters.
It is calibrated for M118 ball and I tried to ballistically duplicate this US Army load with 170 FMJ Lapua Lock Base bullets. Lapua and/or RWS match brass, 42.0 grains of IMR 4064 and Federal 210 match primers. Chronied at very close to 2550 fps.
The front sun shade is pull forward for extension, the focus can be adjusted with a small allen key slot on the rear focus ring.

To zero the turrets, one is better off with another person helping out. Number 1 holds the rifle steady and upright, and one hand holding the indexed turret tight with one hand. Number 2 uses a loonie (near perfect fit) and unlocks the spin-on, spin-off centre piece. With the centre piece removed, now Number 1 then lifts of the indexed turret. The "true windage" knob is now exposed and one can adjust the elevation (or windage knob) until you are zeroed for 200 meters.

Very gently the turret or windage cap is replaced without disturbing the adjustment knob and it reads 200 on the elevation turret.

The locking centre piece is replaced and tightened with the toonie.

Reconfirm zero @200 meters with your ammunition. Now in theory, you can adjust it at out to 800 meters via the elevation turret, with fixed secondary crosshairs for 900 and 1000 meters within the reticle pattern.

Done deal.....trial and error with a good friend!

Thank you Silverback!! :)

I was pretty close, 665 meters came out to closer to 700 meter elevation with my handloads, but the windage was bang on.

Interesting indeed!
My handload:

-42.0 gr IMR 4064
-Lapua or RWS brass
-Federal Match 210 primer
-170 gr Lapua Lock Base bullets

Was out again today with my Norfield rifle, has been very satisfying after the amount of time and money spent!!
5 shot groups, 100 yards.
Groups today were 1.139. .973, .664, .942. and .764. Average .896
I know this is not normal with the M14 platform so anyone who is interested is invited to the Sharon Gun Club, Newmarket Ontario to see this and shoot this rifle! Just PM me and we can set up a date, I am having a blast with this thing!

Thats some pretty awesome shooting. I'm still trying to get a good load together .

Bump.

Going to try this at 500 meters when I get home just for the hell of it. Will be interesting to see how my rifle does. Bench rest season is over for me so I need something to keep my occupied for awhile.

If a 168g SMK over 41.5g of IMR 4895 and seated to an OAL of 2.800 and CCI BR2 primers doesn't give you great results then something is wrong with your rifle. :) Seriously though, if you're having troubles finding a load, start there.
