GSG STG 44 in 22LR Whats the big deal?

Picked one up from Edmonton Cabelas today (yes don't yell at me). Only one they had show up. Took it out tonite to just test ammo types for function. So far Stingers, Minimags, federal bulk 525, RWS Club, Aguila Red and blue box. Gonna hit the range tommorow and play at 25 and maybe 50 yards. Looks promising. Plus it's an StG can go wrong. Too bad Airwolf is too weak to offhand a 10lb rifle. It's a lot of fun

How did the range trip go?

Range report!

Took it to the range today. This is my first .22 rifle but likely my last. Fun little plinker. Fairly accurate, tested up to 25 yards. Don't think I can go any further than that with iron sights due to bad eyes. I had bought a UTG claw mount and RDS for this but will not mount as the rifle is already pretty heavy. Put through 100 rounds of CCI mini-mag had only 1 failure to feed due to magazine, otherwise ran flawlessly. Even though it's a fun little plinker and accurate due to no recoil, I think this will be my last .22 rifle

As far as the weight issue goes...

A "real" Stg44 weighs 4.6 kilos...
So if this plinker is a copy... they got that right.

Of course it's soooo not a copy in that it's not a gas operated, tilting bolt select fire carbine.

I haven't seen one, but I imagine it's just a simple blow back operated .22.

Like the millions of other .22 semi's

Lol so Im not the only one thinking its too heavy. However then you are limited to short distances because you have irons.
Sure its a NR military copy I see the fun in that, once that fact wears off, you have a short distance 10+lb .22.
Atleast it shoots.

If this is your first 22rifle, what are you basing your claim of it being accurate on? If you only tested it to 25 yards with open sights, you really haven't tested it's accuracy as a 22lr rifle.

Well since I'm not going to mount an optic on it, no way I'm going to hit 100 yards with iron sights with my bad eyes lol. If it can hit the squares on my targets, I'm happy :) This is with me holding it with shaky hands already, not on a bench rest. I am not using this a precision rifle, it is strictly a fun plinker

What's the big deal about this gun?
I know GSG is a good brand and has fewer issues than other brands.
Parts seem to be all metal.
However did you guys read the specs?
9.26 lbs unloaded w/o optics
So you're going to have a 10+lb .22

Guess we will see the accuracy and ftf/fte issues when people do reviews.
How's takedown and cleaning?
Does it take a special scope mount?
How much are extra mags?

Sadly some stores won't have extra mags. Sorta dumb it you ask me, However atleast its a 25 round mag.

So again, what is the appeal of this rifle?

It looks cool AS IS and pisses off libs. For everything else there is Ruger 10/22.

Bonus: 22 round mags = more fun.

Got mine today, this is going to be a fun gun on steel at my range! I've got 1/5 scale NRA smallbore silhouettes, 8" steel bowling pins, steel gophers and crows and a scaled down biathlon plate rack. I've got lots of M22 and buckets o bullets to feed this thing, next weekend.

EE post

Bought brand new from Wanstalls, 100 rounds of CCI mini-mag run down the tube. Little too heavy for me, looking into getting a Ruger SR-22 instead.

Dude did you not read?
9.5lbs! Thats without the loaded mag, scope and scope mount.
So since there have been a dozen or so on EE.
Guess I was right.
Other than it being a ww2 clone, its just a really heavy 22.
Hope you guys are having fun.
Atleast there havent been horrible reviews on it.

So far, I really like mine. Zero MF with 3 different types of HV 22. Only shot with irons though. Can't wait to try it with a scope.

I love the "real feel" of it. If this rifle is too heavy for people, they need to work out more....

I fired 300 rounds through mine yesterday. It is a really cool, fun rifle to shoot.
Btw, I did not have any weight issues with it. It would appear that some guys, need to
work on their upper body strength.

Lol and how long did you guys shoot for?
If weight wasnt a deal breaker, then list off other 22s semi autos that are 10lbs+
Even ARs are around 7 lbs loaded.
Must be denial since its a $700 10lb rimfire thats only good to 50yds.
If its about a war replica and being a wannabe soldier, then call a spade a spade.
Again atleast it functions and has 25 round mags.

It serves the same purpose that your built-up 10/22's do: to make the owner smile. If it does that, it's all good. If it stops doing that, you can sell it. If it never does that to begin with...don't buy it. That doesn't mean that it won't make someone else happy.

Jeez, I can rationalize a gun purchase as well as anyone...how else would I wind up with dedicated skunk rifles, starling rifles, house sparrow .410's, bumblebee guns, dinosaur rifles, and zombie scatterguns? Life gets easier when you stop rationalizing, and just get stuff because you like it. :)
