.223 68 gr. Hornady BTHP Match load is a real winner!

I know its not a good idea to recommend specific loads but I found a really accurate one this evening.
We were shooting at 300 meters and I tried some hand loads that I was working on. The best load produced stellar results ( at least for me...


RIfle- Mossberg MVP

Scope- Barska 4-16 x 56


Load- Hornady 68 gr HPBT over 23.5 gr H4895 powder and lit by a Winchester WSR primer. The brass is recent manufacture Federal with the light crimp on the primer pocket (swaged out before loading). Bullet seated to 2.250".

Shot at the PEIRA range from the 300 meter point. Grouped at .85 inches.

I have found the 68 grainer to be a great shooter in just about any .223. I like the way the 68 and 69 grainers give a little more velocity that the 77's do and yet fly much better at distance than the 55's. Can't go wrong with the H4895 either.

Good group .85 at 300 meters.When you get tired of shooting 68 grainers try Sierra 69 gr smk over Varget.Good Luck.

I always found the Sierra 69gr to shoot just a CH better than the Hornady 68gr in my AR15 HBAR. Still, a .85 inch group @ 300 M is very fine performance.

I found the nosler match bullets to not only shoot the best, but we're very effective on coyotes.

Also, Prvi 69 grain bullets are very accurate at much less cost if you can find them.

I had great success with the hornady 68gr as well. The sierra 69gr not so much.

A 9 twist will do 70grs for sure and will do some 75's

My 9-twist Rem 700 (XCR Tactical Long Range, 26" barrel) stabilized Sierra 77gr Tipped Match Kings with no problem, but I'm going to try some 69gr TMK's for comparison.

I was using a 1:9 for the hornady 68's and was also shooting berger 77gr tactical pretty well

I knew some people can shoot the 77's but I didnt think it was the norm, so I never mentioned it.

My cheapy Mossberg has a 1 in 9 twist. The thing is a solid performer though. The only suggestion I would make is to perhaps swap out the benchrest stock if shooting prone. It's just too short.

Shot it in a F-Class shoot yesterday and had some fairly decent results. Even managed a few V-Bulls out to 600 yards.
The downrange velocity of this load was 2150@300 yds, 1630@500 yds and 1440@600 yds.
