IMR-4064...the most versatile powder?

IMR4064 is right up there with the best powders. More consistent accuracy out of .30 calibres with match bullets and most other powders than either 4895. However, that doesn't mean your rifle will like it. Certainly a place to start though.

After a little testing, I have decided to hold only IMR 4064 for what I shoot......222 Rem Mag, 243 and 270. My rifles in these calibers really seem to like it.

IMR4064 is a great powder in 7mm-08 and .223. It tends to be one of the better powders for slightly reduced loads and lighter bullets so lends itself well to downloading for new shooters and kids.

My kids all all learned to shoot centerfire rifles using 7mm08 loaded with 120 gr Sierra Pro hunters and starting loads of IMR4064 getting about 2500fps mv. Accurate, low recoil, 200 yd deer and range rifle.

As usual sunray is incorrect as IMR 4895 was the propellant choice for many years in .30 Cal National Match rifle ammunition produced by Lake City!

I am down to my last 5 pounds of R-15, i really think, i will have to go back to Varget when i am all out...
This will be a big lost, not being able to get some Realoder serie powder anymore, it given me my best 308 loads ever...

IMR 4064 does great in the .348, .243, .225, .38-55, .30-30, .303 British, .270, .25-35, .257 Roberts, 7 by 57, .222, and those are the ones that I have been shooting for years.

I was using IMR4064 for my .308 loads and kept hearing Varget was superior and more accurate, so I tried it. It seemed pretty much the same, no more accurate IMHO, so I went back to 4064. The 4064 seems to be more available, and cheaper, and my best groups ever were with the 4064, so I'm sold.

A lot of great powders mentioned by everyone a powder I have been using in 222,223,6mmppc and couple of others that has not been mentioned is VT 133
had some great loads with H 322 but this 133 is by far the best powder for me
Its available but its 98.00 for 1 kg

Because my favorite powders from Alliant are no longer available, I started looking at different powders for reloading. I found recipes with IMR-4064 for the. 260 Rem, .30-30 Win, 44 mag, .35 Whelen, .358 Norma, 9.3x62, .270 win, .30-06, .35 Winchester, .303 British and even the. 45-70. It seems one could standardize on 1 powder for everything. Has anyone else been doing this?

You need to remove 44 Mag from that list.

Once you do that, there are at least 20 powders that list loads for the remainder of those rounds. Not for all bullet weights though - it's tough to find a powder that's optimal (even tolerable) for a wide range of weights for even one of those rounds. Spend some time looking at load tables and you'll see what I mean. As for accuracy, with "one powder", you greatly limit the likelihood that you'll find adequately accurate loads as well.

The "does it all best wonder utility powder" is a fantasy for anyone who loads for more than 3-4 chamberings, and even then they need to be chamberings well suited for that one powder.

Imr 4064 gives me awesome results in 223 with 60 gr flat base, my 30-06 with 180 gr ttsx as well as cast loads in the 30-30 and cast and jacketed in the 303. It's a staple on my bench along with imr 3031 and h4895

Started using 4064 last year because I couldn't find Varget....now it will always be on my powder shelf.:)

IMR4064 or IMR4895 are pretty much a universal propellant for any of the military cartridges from .223/5.56 thru 6.5 Swede, 7x57, .308/7.62, .30-06, 7.62x54,.303 Brit, 8x57 and even the .45-70. If you shoot a Garand or M14 type they are compatible with the gas system and accurate to boot. IMR4064 is a bit too loggy to meter smoothly, but you can throw a lower charge and trickle up to the desired weight.

IMR4064/IMR4895 are what we used before Varget hit the shelves 20 yrs ago. I use Varget as well, but don't find any real advantage over the other 2.

Same here. Started using it for .308 and now I use it for .270 and for a buddies .257.

I added a powder trickler to my kit after I started using 4064. A must have for sure, as it is hard to throw an accurate amount from the measure.
