My rifle shoots 1/2" groups.... too bad I don't... Yet...

Awesome rifle, I'll have to have a look at it if I ever see you out at Stitsville.

By all means, I try to be there every week or so. Come say Hi.

Funny thing is I have run into a few people on the range that my ice breaker line was "isn't that rifle for sale on cgn?" or "do you happen to be username ______ ?"

Great video thanks, I think I got the diopter adjusted just right, but I will check again in the morning. My reticle does not have numbers on it, but numbers sure would help. Thanks again for taking the time to explain this to me.

No problem, I am glad I could be of help.

Happy shooting.

(´・_・`)...

Every time I try, the first few are great, then the adrenalin kicks in and my reticle starts jumping all over the place :(

First 3 in almost the same hole, then it all falls apart lol.

First run out of the new year, I put 80 rounds through my R700, was nailing gongs at 200, 400, and 500 meters. Great fun, and I am really getting into the tactical precision shooting.

Well I tried again today, Getting better.
I will try a lead sled to see how much is shooter error, and how much is the gun.
I am betting most of the issues are shooter based.

(Bottom group is not included)

Rifle: Remington 700 LTR in Cadex strike 30 chassis.
Scope: Vortex Viper PST 6x-24x FFP
Ammo: 168 gr Norma Match
Rest: Harris bipod and rear beanbag
Range: 100Y
Groups: 5 rounds
Math to determine MOA if over 100y range: Calipers were set to .308, zeroed, and measured outside of black to outside of black.

Group 1 = .640"
Group 2 = .426"
Group 3 = .359"
Group 4 = .744"
Group 5 = .580"

Avg = .580"

Pic of rifle: Same as first post... forgot to take another today.

This is very good results... JP.

Thanks JP, the progress is encouraging.

out of my last 20 groups the average is .791"

with an outside range of .359" - 1.243"

So I am pretty consistent Sub-MOA with this rifle.
Almost 3/4 MOA, but not quite.

just a couple of things, your rear bag looks to soft, needs to be firm in order to be steady, and try shooting off of something other then a bipod........

your rifle talks to you, but you need to know how to listen to it, you need to shoot 2 five shot groups, one with barely any pressure of your shoulder on the butt of the rifle, then a second with pressure on the butt, one of these two groups is going to be tighter then the other, now the rifle will tell you if it likes to be hugged or just held, once you know it's preference you can move on to the challenge

I firmed up the rear bag some since that picture. (and added two more to my collection)
and Yes, This rifle definitely likes being hugged.

I could really use some coaching in the Precision world, Anybody in Ottawa want to hit the range sometime?

I am noticing that if I take my time I end up with larger groups than if I try to shoot faster. (which goes against what I was taught)
I think I am losing consistency in my hold taking my time, I get tired, and eye strain... etc...

Sometimes folding you bipod and just lay the front on sandbags will tighten the groups a little... JP.

then shoot fast because that is how you work best, watch the videos on you tube of the long range record holders, 5 shots off in 8 seconds.........get some ribbons or buy a wind flag, maybe the groups aren't you but are due to changing conditons

Yes... Yes.. that must be it. :)

Today the conditions were nearly perfect.

I would like to try placing my target on a 45' angle, as my scope reticule is sometimes difficult to line up on the corners.
The reticle lines are pretty thick and there is probably .1" or so of guess factor.

Maybe putting the target as a diamond would help me line up a bit better on the points.

thick cross hairs can add almost a half inch to your group size just by aiming error, move to a dot or a fine cross hair for precision work

play with your printer and make a white square with a black line around it, square or circle doesn't matter, play with the size until you have a target that at 100 yards you can manipulate the margins of your scope in the box, much like the way aperture sight shooters change inserts to fit the target, then you can define your true aiming pint and shrink your groups

.1 ether side of your true aiming point is .2, add that to a .2 or .3 group and now you can see how it compounds the issue

makes sense. I did find that when I put one round in the paper, POA/POI, the small hole was a great aiming point.

However as the hole gets bigger with the following rounds it gets harder and harder to hold a tight POA.

I will try printing off a sheet with five .308 sized grey holes... and try that.
