I am looking at buying a rifle this weekend and it will be the first time I have purchased one, yes I have a couple but they were all passed on to me by family and no they are not around for me to ask this question to. I am just curious on what if anything I should bring with me (aka a rifle bag, trigger lock) or do they just walk you down and hand you the rifle after purchase and away I go.

I guess I'm a bit nervous having never actually gone to a store to buy a gun.

Biggred, relax.

You're not making an illegal gun buy in a shady part of town, you're a licensed individual - one of the good guys.
Now, congrats on your first rifle purchase!
Bring a case, or gun sock to put the firearm in, although you DO NOT require it, you may trigger or cable lock it, that's up to you.

Go on, tell us what's caught your eye!

If you're buying a non-restricted then you don't need to bring anything other than your PAL. If it's new they'll take it out of the box, assemble it for you to give it the once over, disassemble it, put it back in the box, and say "Have fun" ;) No need for locks.

I don't know about restricteds.

I have bought a couple in person at a store. Like DitoB said they will assemble and check it over and hand it you so you can do your own check disassemble make your purchase and your on your way. No need to worry about anything but the ammo you are going to use in it.

Guess I am kinda working myself up a bit. Many rifles have caught my eye, it was a battle and it has been so hard trying to decide which to make my first purchase.

However after careful consideration I have chosen to go with the Ruger 10/22 Carbine Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle – Stainless Steel. Most of my firearm experience is with shotguns and I felt this would be a good starting point.

Thank you all for your reply

All you need is your PAL and MONEY......that's it.

They should allow you to pick it up, shoulder it, see how it feels
They should show you the way the model you are buying operates, how to put the mag in, how to dis-assemble etc

Have fun

Don't monopolize the gun counter guy's time if there are people waiting.
Don't muzzle sweep people when you are checking out the firearm.

If it's new it'll come in a box. Just like buying a new power tool.

X2... And if it is a used firearm just ask the store if they could include a sock. Rifle sox are only $10 retail which means it cost the store less than $5 to bring in. I made an extra $80 at the local gun show two weeks ago by selling some of the sox I have accumulated this past year. Lol

Ha - remember when you bought your first pack of condoms? - Same gig only different.

Far North has great advice - if you are a teeny bit unsure - wait a couple of days and go when it is nice and quiet so you can take a bit of time (in a month or two - a couple of days will make no difference). If you are looking to get a scope with it, the store will probably fit it and bore sight for you - again, it can take a bit of time - so go when the store is quiet. (Don't forget to budget for trigger lock, rings, scope, (you may want to research that a bit as it is easy to get bamboozled) they may throw in a sock - if not - another $10-15... - it may come in a box - but you will need the sock to go out and use it).

If you know what you want - it is a 5 minute transaction - if you want to noodle it - then probably go when the store is less busy. You also may want to pick your store (if you know what I mean) some can be a little offhand.

A really top store in the region is Flys Etc in High River - a bit of a drive - but HR is quieter, they have tons of time, very friendly - well worth the trip (phone first to see if they have what you want though).

That was a great question - if you need some 22 - PM me as I have a couple of bricks spare

Don't be in such a hurry that you do the salesmans job for him, look the rifle over very carefully if there's anything you notice that you don't like (nicks or scratches)ask him to bring another one out , after you've decided on which rifle see if you can get the salesman to throw something else in , maybe a gun sock or some solvent or even some patches

Good advice. Some stores even have firm rules about where you can or cannot point a firearm as you handle it even beyond what constitutes safe gun handling. Ask first to avoid embarrassment.

I don't think you need a bag or a trigger lock for a NR rifle. Just pay for it, through it on the back seat and go. If you plan on making any stop overs on the way home , just cover it with something and make sure to lock your vehicle .

Lots of good advice and clarification by those replying. For fun, I want to tell about one experience buying an SKS from an eccentric gun shop.
The store owner told me to get out of the store and ''Walk with pride'' when I asked for a plastic bag to cover up my newly bought SKS. It was FUN!

As someone on the other side of the counter, I can safely say there's only two things that annoy me that happen with relative regularity:

1. Don't point guns at me. Common sense.

2. Don't bring your kids in, then let them run around unsupervised for two hours. Also common sense.

I think most of us also appreciate when you open the bolt of your gun when you come in. Once or twice in the five or six years I've been doing this, someone's forgotten they have a live round in the chamber.

Depends on the store. At my local store, if it's a new firearm, they'll show it to you, you get to look it over, clerk puts it back in the box and either rings up the item or walks it out to the cash to get rung up. If it is used, bring your case and trigger lock or they might ask you to purchase 'em.
