Store Etiquette ?

I am looking at buying a rifle this weekend and it will be the first time I have purchased one, yes I have a couple but they were all passed on to me by family and no they are not around for me to ask this question to. I am just curious on what if anything I should bring with me (aka a rifle bag, trigger lock) or do they just walk you down and hand you the rifle after purchase and away I go.

I guess I'm a bit nervous having never actually gone to a store to buy a gun.

I bought a rifle from Reliable Gun just before Christmas for myself, they wrapped it up in some paper "to prevent scratches" and I walked home with it down the sidewalk as-is.

And I didn't get taken down by the SWAT team, lol

Guess I am kinda working myself up a bit. Many rifles have caught my eye, it was a battle and it has been so hard trying to decide which to make my first purchase.

However after careful consideration I have chosen to go with the Ruger 10/22 Carbine Semi-Auto Rimfire Rifle – Stainless Steel. Most of my firearm experience is with shotguns and I felt this would be a good starting point.

Thank you all for your reply

I bought 2 10/22's at Reliable and they came in square-ish cardboard boxes. No problem.

I bought a SKS and they put it in a long clear plastic bag so that it didn't get grease on everything. Worked for me. Last gun I bought they handed it to me and I took it to my truck and put a coat over it and about 6 hours later paid for it.
Last time I bought condoms the cute girl smiled at me and told me to have a nice night.

I too have had similar concerns when I purchased my first firearm. Wasn't sure exactly what to expect when shopping for a firearm, being a newbie.

The non-restricted riffle (SKS) I bought was packed in a cardboard box with its accessories. The crate of ammo was far more conspicuous as I hauled it to my car ;)

As for asking to handle a firearm, I find that most sales clerks will not let you handle a firearm without first seeing your PAL/RPAL. I guess they just want to make sure you can handle it safely and not scare other people in the shop.

Other than the above, ask questions and look at options. I thought I was all set to buy a Ruger 10/22. After asking questions and going through a number of the other options, decided on a Remington 597 with a scope for $100 less than the base 10/22 model. More money to spend on ammo and mags :)

Wait until you buy off the EE. Repurposed boxes, old dish towels (or shirts), and 12.7 km of packing tape. Lol.

Haha, true. I tend to overuse packing tape, but I know how CP treats their packages. The best thing I found to use for barrels are those pipe insulating sleeves, come in a few sizes for different barrels.

i bought my rifle at bass pro and it felt weird walking out with a brown box that had a big sticker on it that had the word "firearm" on it. as mentioned above, i inspected it etc. before buying it with some common sense like not pointing it at anyone.

Didn't they also peel the logo stickers off of the Savage rifles?!

Nope just put black tape over the logo.

Only the tac'd models...

Nope ALL Savages. Semi, bolts, single shots, break barrel. If it had the Indian chief logo on it, They blacked it out.
