Like most an sks was one of my first purchases, and I picked a real fine russian one with chrome barrel. Works great, but I rarely took it out because I don't like the attached magazine, it's heavy, and the cleaning process wasn't super easy considering I had to break it down to component parts almost due to the surplus ammo.
I grabbed a vz with the chrome barrel and the polymer hardware... First day out I ordered a bunch of brass and a die kit. So now I just shoot it and throw it back in storage. No corrosion issues and it just never ever stops working. Anyone that has function issues with an action that simple should be going to a gunsmith because I have never, not once, had a jam or feed issue with that thing, like not once.
Mine is drilled for the scope mount, but the iron sights are fantastic, in fact my front post is a bit loose, and somehow I still keep hitting the target. It's like it wants to shoot well. The sks just sits in the closet now, I don't want to waste good reloads on it, I don't buy surplus anymore, and it's not worth selling.
To me, the vz was something I should have bought years ago. I use it more than my AR-15 and I don't have to quadruple lock the thing and only use it at the range. Oh and I do agree with the 30/5 magazines being a bit silly, so I grabbed a few of the smaller ones. Looks less AK-47ish but just way easier to use. Lastly, when the zombies do come, this is the one I would grab as a service rifle, over anything else by far. Oh, and I do love the safety. I mean, if it's not jabbing you in the hand, it's not safe! What a simple, ingenious idea. The sks one is not bad, but a bit harder to manipulate.
