I bought the conversion kit for a 1911 and a bag of brass.

When Can Am was selling those plain slide 1911s with a case of cheap ammo, I bought several guns from guys who wanted the ammo, but not the gun. I paid $250 to $275 and thought it was a good price for potential project guns. I was right.

The guns are poorly finished compared to current production Norcs, and somewhat sloppier. I selected the one that shoots the poorest, and dropped in the conversion barrel, full length rod guide and the 25 pound spring.

The good news is that it it a true "drop in". No fitting is required.

The bad news is that you need the hand strength of Attila the Hun to compress the spring and get the barrel installed. It took two of us, plus a vice to hold the slide, to get it done.

I spoke to Clark Custom (the maker) and they tell me that within a month new production will have a pin hole in the rod guide so that the spring can be compressed and locked in place with a pin, outside the gun, then dropped in. Great idea. If you want, you could drill a hole yourself, to have this feature.

I shot the pistol with the 460 brass, 200 grain AIM plated bullets and 9.5 to 12.0 gr of Power Pistol. Accuracy was fair. I am guessing the plated bullets might not like Mach 1 +.

Next step will be to try 230 FMJ.

The muzzle brake works. Recoil was a bit more than a regular 45, but nothing like shooting a 44 Mag revolver. The sound was quite different. More of a snap than a boom.

I will report back on how the FMJ bullets group.

Note: I loaded with standard Winchester Large Pistol primers. They worked just fine. (Clark suggests Magnum Pistol primers).

I also fired some standard velocity 45ACP ammo. They cycled the action, but just barely. I did not notice that the muzzle brake did not do much with this ammo.

Results with plated bullets were not good, so I switched to 230 FMJ and Hornady 230 XTP. Accuracy is very good and the gun shoots to point of aim - the same as it did with the original barrel.

20 yards - 2 hands.

460 Rowland Load data - 230 FMJ with Power Pistol & WLP primers Starline brass*

10.0 - 1230 fps
10.5 - 1280
11.0 - 1312

* Brass is only $28USD/100 A nice feature of this special caliber.

Recoil is there, but nothing like a 44 mag. I assume the brake makes a big difference.

I tried some 220gr DG lead bullets over 6.0 g of Unique. Accuracy was excellent and they cycled the action - barely.

I have the same gun, but have played with it using 45-08. I'll try your loads in mine, and here are a few loads 45-08 loads with a 230 gr at an OAL of 1.275" that should be compatible with the 460 Rowland:

Longshot

7.0 grs - 850 fps
8.0 grs - 980 fps
9.0 grs - 1080 fps
10.0 grs - 1200 fps
11.0 grs - 1320 fps

HS-6

8.0 grs - 800 fps
9.0 grs - 880 fps
10.0 grs - 980 fps
11.0 grs - 1060 fps
12.0 grs - 1180 fps

Your plinker velocity loads with HS6 will be tried. I have a lot of HS-6 and HS-7 on hand. I will try FMJ loads with the HS-7, too.

This would be the ultimate wilderness carry set up if we didn't have such asinine gun laws. What about using 250 grain .452 bullets like an XTP or hard cast? Would that be too rough on the riggin'?

Interesting that it was truly "drop in". There was another member on CGN that had the 460 Rowland kit from another manufacturer, he had barrel fitment issues and ended up with a lot of peening on the barrel lugs.

I would use mine for wilderness carry. It could be carried loaded, with safety on. 9 rounds of powerful goodness.

The muzzle brake is important for comfort, fast shooting and for one handed shooting, if required.

There is loading data published for heavier bullets. Because the bullets have to be seated deeper to maintain the fit to the magazine, the extra case length does not help powder capacity - especially if a heavy bullet is seated deeper.

This thread got me interested in going back to developing more loads for the 45-08. I really want to try CFE Pistol, and have waited to find some, but haven't yet secured any.

The loads you and I have tried illustrate nicely the limitations of "Powder Burn Rate" tables. In every table I've seen, Power Pistol is shown to be faster than HS-6, which is shown to be faster than Longshot, yet in the 45-08 and 460 Rowland, Power Pistol and Longshot show almost identical results, while HS-6 uses more powder for less MV.

I did find this link if you haven't seen it: http://1587510142.rsc.cdn77.org/RRo...the _45_ACP_on_STEROIDS-LOAD_DATA-K Kempa.pdf None of these are "full-house" - they seem to be about 90% loads.

clark customs and 460rowland - neither are sending kits up to Canada anymore as of January 2015.

your only option now is to have them imported by a importer like irungunz or prophet.

shame, it sure was easy to order them last year.

where did you find brass at $28/100?????

i spent a hell of a lot more then that when i ordered in my brass!
a HELL of a lot more then that!

Let it go, North.

Let it go.

I get it all the time too. I buy a gun or a bulk ammo purchase or something like that from one supplier...and the next day somebody is blowing it out at 50% off what I paid for it. It never fails. The gun gods piss upon us and mock us.

That was me. According to the Kunhausen books, the barrel was in spec but the Norc slide wasn't because of the rough machining. All I had to do was remove a bit of material from the inside of the slide to get the required clearances.
Strange that the manufacturers aren't shipping to Canada anymore. It's definitely a fun gun to shoot though.

if you can not get the Rowland parts, just using 45 super or 45-08 brass and loads in a stock Nork would be a low cost, easily available option.

Got a premodded Norc on the way with 100 pieces of 45-08 brass and can't wait to throw my new carry gun into action. Now need dies, powder and ATC hopefully all before the weekend oh and my drivers license needs to be renewed as well Laugh2
