Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 sale 43% off

Nope this was the hideous one, clearance price $549. And you guys are right, it is even brighter in person! Most important though is they are accurate and good quality barrelled action, I will paint mine or something!

Well he was probably blowing smoke up someone's ass, $549 is what their regular price is on these, check the link.
Last time I was at SAIL the counter jockey was telling me how he wants to start bringing powder and primers in for the reloaders, said they were already approved to stock 20lbs in the back.....yeah 20 whole pounds which he thought was some assload of powder to have on hand at the store.

Yep it shows that on the online store but in this store everyone had a clearance tag on it, so the whole store is blowing smoke up their ass! Still hope to get one!

For those that missed the deal, consider that finding a Howa priced in the 4s, and already stocked with a Hogue stock isn't an enormous trick. No flames and no rattle-can needed.

Good suggestion, I'd buy another Howa in a heartbeat.
Very good quality, smooth function along with excellent accuracy with any I've had / have.... whats not to like...

According to Weatherby's website the stock need a pressure point.

"Why are some Weatherby rifles “free floated” and some are not?

We have found through our testing that barrels having a smaller outside diameter than our #3 contour require upward pressure to help stabilize the barrel for increased accuracy. Our free floated barrels have enough rigidity in the barrel for them to be free floated.
"

So if you change the ugly stock for a Boyds stock for example the accuracy will be affected?

I think there are more things at play then float heavy, and have contact with sporter barrels.
You can still get cold barrel shot to shot consistency with a stock touching the barrel. It's when it heats up that the contact varies, throwing your POI. For a hunting rifle it's not critical to free float though due to the minimal amount of shooting.
Free floating will let you keep shooting same POI longer as the barrel heats up, but there is a limit.

Shooting many shots is not the reason that I prefer to float the barrel on a hunting rifle. Having a consistent point of impact under varying temperature and humidity is what appeals to me most, and a quality stock, proper bedding, along with a floated barrel , have provided me with the most consistent point of impact. I have found that even though rifles with a pressure point can provide good accuracy, the pressure at the pressure point can change with temperature or humidity, and the point of impact often changes as a result.

I agree with that for sure, I'd take a ff glass/kevlar stock with full aluminum bedding block, with a skim bed to minimise effects of the elements any day over what we get on these Vanguard's.
I'll do some testing this month as the weather changes and see if my poi shifts at all. The day I zeroed it was 20 degrees, it's been down to 3 at night so every weekend will get a bit cooler. I don't think it will affect much with these stocks though, there is a pretty substantial contact area on the barrel, and the plastic shouldn't shrink from cold or be effected by humidity like wood will. I was going to hunt this year with a Zastava M85 in 7.62x39 but it's hasn't been impressive out of the box even with handloads. It's a good candidate for a float/bed job...definitely needs work.
I'll probably hunt with the Vanguard....even though it's going to get me razzed.....

How would these compare to the Ruger American?

The RA is more of a budget rifle. I bought one in .270 for hunting and I am happy with it. I did have an issue with a detachable mag not fitting right and it was replaced very quickly. Pretty happy with Ruger's service through their depot in QC.

That being said, if I was still looking for a synth stocked rifle in .270, I would have gone with this rifle and added a new stock. More options available in that regard. I do prefer a detachable mag though, so would have converted it.

Thanks!

It's time to mount my redfield revolution 3-9x40 to the rifle... what do you recommend for mounting hardware on the vanguard 2? bases and rings... (scope is 1 inch tube).
Thanks in advance.
