Standing Offhand CHALLENGE

Why is this in the precision rifle forum if it's geared towards hunting and sporting rifles?

Never been to a PR match that had standing shots that didn't allow (or encourage) the use of a sling.

Never been to a silhouette match then I guess. Slings are prohibited in all varieties of Metallic Silhouette.

Would any one care to comment on my pictures of my attempts at the challenge, on page four of this thread? I'm going to shut off my computer in a few minutes and then the pictures will probably disappear again.

I don't see any pictures. Do it the easy way and become a member and you can attach pics right to your post

I see some attachment symbols but no pictures. I havent been able to post pictures either although i can do it on another forum. I dont know why they have to make it so difficult

I will have to read the ''How to post pictures'' sticky a few more times and try again in the morning.

You're copying the links to the pictures from your email, we're not logged into your email so we cannot see them. When you restart the computer, you log out of your email and that's why you cannot see them.
You need to save them to your computer and then download them to a image hosting site like photobucket so you can share them.

I use photobucket for posting on CGN .... it is not as easy as using tapatalk .... but CGN does not subscribe to tapatalk.

Gday fellas, I tried this the other day.

wow.. shocking.

4 shots on the A4 and 3 inside of the circle..... 2 off paper!

have to try again soon

Did this one some time ago while preparing for a buffalo cull. .458 Win mag, with a cheaper Hornady bullet for a practice load. It went a little better than expected. 50 shots.

Dogleg, that there is some shooting. Pretty amazing. And with a .458 Winmag standing offhand at 100 yds. You should really check out the National Silhouette championships. I think you would do very very well. Congrats.

I used to shoot some rimfire silhouette, but that seems to have died out. I have a couple sets of targets that I still use at my private range along with a selection of center fire capable gongs. The handgun club has a decent set of self setters, but that is 200 yard scaled to 100 and it's only rated for rimfires. As far as I know centerfire silhouette is dead in the province, so the only way I'll get a realistic practice range is to build it. I haven't ruled that out, but it hasn't happened yet. The trouble is a basic disagreement with what offhand shooting is for. I don't accept 500 meter Rams as the purpose.

I am going to give this a go. But I think I'll go with my 30-30 marlin with peep sights. Was pretty close to that before hunting season.

Peep would be interesting. I thought maybe red dot was the answer, but I was wrong:). I do believe there may be some advantage for lower recoiling rifles?

I know in fullbore sillywet they tend to use the smallest calibre/bullet combination they can find that will still knock down the steel rams at 500 metres reliably. Think 7/08 or .260.

Years ago Jack O'Connor opined that a decent but far from great shot should be able keep nearly all his shots on a 8" bull offhand at 100 yards, and the few misses very close. Good day he'd get them all. He also thought that he should be able to do the same thing from sitting at 200. At that level he wouldn't win any matches but wouldn't embarrass himself in many hunting camps.

Decent doesn't seem like such a lofty goal, and is well within reach of anyone who sets out to gain that skill level. All you need is the desire and a truck load of ammo.

If Jack O'Connor was right, we will see lots of successfull posts in this thread because I know there are lots of decent shots in our midst ... and perhaps even a few great shots that will make that 6" circle look big. All that is needed is 7 shots... not six...not eight.

I'd be surprised if you get more than a few. The last offhand challenge got all sorts of responses and almost no targets. It was only 4 shots.

This pic was from that challenge; I used a Kimber .338 Win Mag and a 700 LSS 30-06 fitted with 10 shot clips.
