My buddies had a draw in 6-06 here in BC near Babine Lake. I was there for 10 days with them and had to leave to get back home for work and they hadn't seen a bull yet. I saw one when I was driving around alone while they were boating into a marsh. They are still hunting up there. I hope something happens for them soon.

I told them about the spot, but he looked like he was traveling.

About calling, one of my friends has an old Pringles potato chip cardboard tube that he put a shoelace in and uses that to call. I think it sounds like a sick high pitched milk cow, and kind of goes "Yeow, Yeow!"

I think he scares moose away with the damn thing. It doesn't sound like any cow moose I've ever heard or other person calling either.

The other guy calls well, but the Pringles can guy thinks he helps by making his noises too..

Can something like that keep bulls away?

I'd have to say it sure doesn't help based on my own experience over 3 seasons of practicing moose calls in my area (closed for moose except by LEH).
I tried all kinds of calls, coffee can and string, fancy calls from the store , playing the CD on the jeep stereo and trying to copy it with the call.
I can honestly say, it repelled the moose hahaha

then I did it right one day and the results were memorable.
been working good ever since ;)
I'll be up in 6-06 next weekend for the general opener on the Tuesday.

we had a guide in Cape Breton one year. His electronic call had a very negative effect.it got worse when it rained or snowed. We boke away in two groups and still hunted where there was sign.Got a nice Bull that way.

Good luck up there.

There have been LEH bulls taken, just not by my LEH holding buddies. Yet.

Lots of moose killed with the can and shoe string call. Don't sell it short. I always claim, when moose are Horny, car horn will work. :)

Grizz

In the peak of the rut, all calls work, when it's over, you better be doin it right.

You got that right!!
If you encounter an over ###ed bull in the heat of the rut, you have to be careful to keep him from you.
Two foresters working in central BC when they used to use a chain measure, attracted moose all through the rut, just giving the "hep," or whatever code signaled the chain man that chain end had arrived.
In normal calling time, it is a real art and I prefer my mouth, aided by an old fashioned birch bark horn. At that time a bad call and/or too much calling, will very quickly send a bull moose into far off pastures.

This. I've seen moose called in with a bloody chainsaw, let alone the old tobacco can/shoestring trick that sometimes sounds like anything but a moose, depending on who's doing the calling. When they're horny, they'll come to even the worst calls.

What does LEH mean?

I'm from Ontario so i could be wrong but i believe it's Limited Entry Hunt? Not 100% on that one though.

When moose are in the rut, Look out they will come to anything! I was riding my horse saw a bull, made a moose call thought he was going to come hump my horse well I was on it. The rest of the year might stop them for a second or two then they are on their way.

Correct. It is a lottery system for a management unit (MU). Guys apply to specific MU's for a species and a limited amount are handed out for specific periods of time, often three weeks for moose for eg.

Yellow peterbilt with a cat engine and a load of bales going down a hill with the jake on got me run over by a horny bull. The kid I was hunting with shot him after he passed over me on the way to the truck.

I got a horn I made from bark I brought back from my first moose hunt.
Works great. I was out a few days ago and came across some guys that just called a bull in and took him.
Rut is on now. Need a LEH tag. But I might go out and see if I can get a response

It might not bring them in....

But when I was filming a very nice bull moose (had no stinkin tag......)
He would start to walk away and I called him an A$$hole and a bunch of other names lol.
stopped turned and looked at me like WTF ? was that about lol.

Several times.....

If only I had a tag , he woulda ran off the second I stopped the truck lol
