Handguard swap completed, update here : http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...-handguard?p=12038784&viewfull=1#post12038784

I think I will buy a Troy Alpha handguard for my RRA AR15 Varmint.

I currently have a threaded barrel nut but I will have to change it to use the Troy handguard.

They say it don't come with a barrel nut and it require a standard barrel nut.

So here's the noob questions :

Do I need a special standard barrel nut for my bull barrel or every AR barrel nut have the same inside diameter ?

This is a *standard* nut, right ?

EDIT : pics of my actual nut/gas system setup :

Yes, this is a standard barrel nut. RRA bull barrels are 1 1/16" diameter and a standard barrel nut will not fit.

I'd like to point out I find it hilarious that a rifle with the name "Varmint" in it is only allowed in shooting ranges. *sigh*

So I can't use this handguard ? There is no 1 1/16" diameter standard nuts ?

Yeah, its a varmint rifle but only in the US... :yingyang:

A standard barrel nut could be opened up by a machinist, shaving off 0.035-0.040 of material. Then you will run in the problem that your barrel nut wrench won't even slide over that barrel as they have a 1" I.D. However, Noveske got you covered and sells a 1 1/16" barrel nut wrench. I think you would be better off building a new upper with a 15/16" bull barrel and sell this one as is.

No way, not with the value of CAN$ right now...
I wanted to change the handguard even before i bought this upper.

I like the Troy because its slim but if it don't work, i will buy another handguard, that's it.

Opening the nut is not a bad idea. Then modify a wrench to fit or I just buy one.

I searched for the Noveske tool but i've only found a wrench for flat-type-nut.
There is no flat on my nut, must be the wrong tool i guess.

I have one of the Troy Revolution carbon fibre rails and it looks like the Alpha attaches to the factory barrel nut in the same manner. The problem I am almost certain you may run into is the rail uses small clips to attach the rail to your factory nut. These clips slide inside your barrel nut and between the barrel. Because your barrel is such a wide diameter I suspect you will have an interference issue.

I have one of the Rock River Arms barrels and have tried two different rails on it so far. One was a Seekins/Spikes BAR and the other was a Hogue. Both came with barrel nuts that would slide over the barrel no problem.

If you'd like a pic of the tabs that attach to the barrel nut let me know and I will try to get it done for you.

Not sure what you mean about those clips. I've seen a couple of Troy Alpha install videos and I can't see any clips between the barrrel and nut...

EDIT : OK i see what you mean, they call those parts *wedge*. I don't see any issue with it because it can go over the standard nut *theet*...

Tomorrow, I will post a pic of my actual barrel nut...

The wedges do not go over the barrel nut. They go inside it between the barrel and inside of the nut. If your barrel is too big in diameter they may not fit.

Now I'm confused. Nothing goes between the barrel and the barrel nut except the threads on the upper receiver. Are you talking about the handguard when you refer to the barrel nut?

If I was to recommend an amazing rail system on the market today it would be the BCM aka Bravo Company KMR magnesium key mod rail. I don't know if the barrel nut will fit over the varmint barrel made by RRA. The KMR rail is extremely light weight and very very thin.

The barrel nut would probably work if a few thou were taken of the ID.

Clear as mud now ???

If you put one on each side, what is the clearance ( diameter ) between the two ? Inside diameter of the spigot - 2X wedge thickness = Bingo ?

Should have room in the wedge to enter the spigot but the question is how much...

I also added the pics of my actual nut and gas syster setup in my original post.

This week I received the Standard nut.

I made a 1-1/4-18 plug on the lathe as a jig for my Standard Nut.
Then I opened the inside diameter to 1.062 ( barrel have 1.052 ).

Now I need :

- handguard
- shims
- upper vise block
