Ontario expands spring bear hunt to most wmus

Just a few of them, including uncle Joes 25-35, Grandmas Cooey 22, my single 12, my pre 64 30-30, etc... Etc...

Sorry about the thread derail fellas.

Sorry about that.

Now to get back on the suject of our Spring and fall bear hunts With a little luck maybe just maybe our MNR will let us get back to the way it was. Dual season bear hunts allowing a rise in our moose population, more money for those in the hunting trade and more money in the Gov's coffers. It would make for a win all around.

About frickin' time!!! We have enough bears around here to feed everyone that comes hunting for years!!! Tired of them wiping out our moose calves!!

I concur!

edit; I've never been bear hunting in the springtime but you can bet I will be from this point forward. "if it only saves one moose calf" lol

The spring bear hunt was cancelled by Mike Harris and John Snobolen after Robert Schad threatened to spend 10 million campaigning against the Ontario Conservatives in ten key ridings, if they did not cancel the hunt... after that meeting and despite overwhelming community and biologist support for continuing the hunt, Snobolen made a statement to the effect of "even one orphaned cub, is one too many... the spring hunt is cancelled."

The ridiculous fact is that it is the fall hunt that may cause orphaning of cubs... not the spring hunt, a fact they had been made aware of, but chose to disregard in seeking an excuse for political expedience.

When I had finished school, I did a contract for the MNR monitoring the spring bear hunt in 1998. We wanted to see how many potential cubs were actually orphaned. It has been a long time since, but I looked at about forty harvested bears, with only one sow lactating, and she wasn't producing much. Anyways, my home MPP was Helen Johns, who was also a family friend. She arranged a meeting for me with John Snobelen to discuss things and the day before it was to happen, I got a call from Helen saying the meeting was cancelled. Off the record, she told me it was being cancelled, and they were capitulating, and it will be announced shortly.

But good news if they're bringing it back.

This new regulations also mean that all bear hunters can only use hanging baits only, bait only 2 weeks before and can only bait 10 kg of bait. Need to read the fine print. OFAH never mentioned that. Not all roses . http://www.ebr.gov.on.ca/ERS-WEB-Ex...ticeId=MTI2MzQ1&statusId=MTkwNjk4&language=en

That document says they are looking for comments about the proposed regulations. Maybe they will listen to hunters and stop the proposed baiting restrictions. I will be sending my comments to the wildlife section.

I missed that part, link?

That will definitely change our tactics :(

MNRF is also seeking comments on ways to regulate the practice of black bear baiting in Ontario for all open bear hunting seasons (both spring and fall). Regulatory amendments under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997 to regulate the activity of baiting black bears would be considered in light of comments received on the following specific elements. The elements of black bear baiting activities include, but are not limited to:

• Permitted placement (e.g., baits must not be placed within a specified distance from private land, occupied dwellings, roadways and railways, canoe portages, marked trails, protected areas, etc.);
• Permitted timing (e.g., placement of bait restricted to the open hunting season in spring or fall and the preceding two weeks);
• Bait removal (e.g., clarifying the requirement to remove all bait and associated materials when the hunting season ends);
• Method of baiting (e.g., requirement to use suspended bait to facilitate identification and protection of females with cubs in the spring); and
• Amount/content of bait (e.g., bait limited to 10 kg).

The regulation of baiting of black bears is intended to avoid creating habituation in black bears to artificial food sources and to reduce the potential conflict with people engaged in other recreational activities. The proposed regulation of these elements of black bear baiting will include consideration of all comments received on the proposal.

You actually think they listen then I have some land in Florida you can buy from me at a good price. This is a done deal and is a game changer for guys who have to drive to baits and bait once a week. Helps local hunters and outfitters a lot.

It is worth a shot. The worst thing they can say is no.

I'm sure that's what a lot of folks said about the spring bear hunt in general. The whole attitude of "screw them, they won't listen so I won't even bother" is what got us in to most of the crappy situations surrounding guns and hunting in the first place. The links say they are considering limiting baits, bait sites and bait methods. "eg. limiting baits to 10kg..." It's an example. They don't seem to have come up with any regulations yet. Now is the time to chime in, instead of just moaning about it afterwards...

If anything, it's Orville Redenbacher who's behind the 10kg bait limit. 10kg is a lot of popcorn...

Below is the comment I sent in:
• Permitted placement should be 100 metres from private land, roadways and railways, canoe portages, marked trails, and protected areas. Occupied dwellings should not be included for private property.
• Permitted timing of the placement of bait restricted to the open hunting season in spring or fall and the preceding two weeks is a good idea
• Bait removal doesn’t need to be done as other animals will clean it up
• Method of baiting by the requirement to use suspended bait to facilitate identification and protection of females with cubs in the spring is a good idea
• Amount/content of bait should be at least 50 kg bag of dog food, 10 kg is too small an amount for those who bait weekly due to work and location.

Better define roadways and marked trails or all logging roads and skidded paths will be off limits

The spring hunt was successful in the past. Reinstate it as it was.
Allow 2 tags. Spring and fall seasons and allow the spring tag to carry over to the fall season

Are you suggesting legal guidelines or giving the MNR baiting tips?

Suspended baits are a terrible idea. If you can't tell a sow from a boar @ ten yards don't hunt bears. It could lead to entangled animals (likely bears) and draw unwanted attention from hikers and other wanderers of the woods. The suspended bait idea is simply to sugar coat the hunt with goofy ethics to help sell the hunt to the antis. The 100m rule is also set to keep some from being outraged about finding a bait site. In my part of the country 20 yards and you could hide a Sherman tank. I am glad that the hunt is back but to some that isn't good enough without extra rules and conditions. Rant off. Hoyt, how did the hunt on the island go?

Hope to see some pics in the hunting section. The .257 is a dandy deer round isn't it?

Darryl

No pics this time... shot it just before dark on my way to pick up dad at his stand... he tripped on a stump on our way out and had a fall... injured his arm and shoulder... it was all I could do to get everything packed and loaded in the dark.

And yes, the Roberts is a dandy little round... particularly in this No.1-RSI... Although I am also looking for one in a M77 MKII Ultralight.

If you go to the link they suggested the information below, so I gave it what I thought would be better for me.
