Did anyone hear of the new regulation for treaty rights in alberta. From my understanding if you are not from a band that has a signed treaty in Alberta, you cannot use your treaty card. Signed treaties are 8,10,6,7 and 4. So in a nut shell if you are not from a band that is in Alberta or Saskatchewan you cannot use your treaty card in Alberta.

This is going to spiral downward from here IMO...hate to sound pessimistic, but a whole bunch of angry white guys will soon sound off...
And no ( I've heard nothing), but I can inquire if you'd like.

It has been passed a week ago. I called fish and wildlife and that's what they stated. They are not sure how they are going to proceed for this hunting season but it has changed. From what I know they are going to be taking the meat from them but they are not going to charge them unless they are repeat offenders.

At a risk of sounding like I'm being argumentative " Why bother to bring it up if you knew?"
If it's to inform the effected Natives...cool.
Other than that...um...trolling might be a term?
The Natives have a tough enough lot in life, just let them harvest as they are legally entitled to IMO

Awesome.
Please accept my apology then.
'Dog-piling' on Native hunting rights is a tad petty IMO. The average Native's lot in life isn't anything most here would trade for.

Wow are these comments ever different from fishing related forums I'm on , not sure how it works in your province but over here people would give a left nut just to have Metis rights. Got blue eyed blondes , I've grew up with. Same neighbourhood, parents make the same wages, same school as me since grade 1. Very comfortable above average life's. But for some reason they are entitled to a harvester card. 3 deer, elk, moose, birds, 50lbs of fish, all on one card.
I understand if your full status , live on the reserve or in the bush somewhere then by all means , sustenance hunting is your way of life and that shouldn't be takin from them.

I am surprised it hasn't went sour yet, but you are most likely right. It's a very taboo subject here.

my youngest son is the most out of the others, as the saying goes, is "Native in appearance" (you hear that on the radio all the time) and he is always asked "have you got a treaty number" to get the discount when he is buying something at the gas station / conv store on the Rez. Anyone know how many digits there are in a MB treaty number?;)

There is a treaty between First Nations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba that recognizes treaty hunting rights across those provinces from treaty Indians from those provinces to be able to hunt and fish in legal hunting and fishing areas across the prairies. This treaty is recognized by Conservation Officers from those provinces.

My family name is on treaty 6, guess I'm good to go. Now if BC would just settle the deal I wouldn't have to travel to another province to have my rights recognized LOL

Sorry but if a natives life is that bad then its likely their own fault. They have all the opportunity in the world given to them, they just need to reach out and grab it and make a better life for themselves. The Government provides all kinds of opportunitys, its not like they are living in Rwanda or anything.

My nephew has his status card, he lives pretty good as it was as a Journeyman Red seal Welder, just now he can get a truck without paying the taxes, and will get first chance a certain jobs ect....

He goes to a reserve to get the truck to get around paying the taxes.

Do you have much thought as to perhaps 'the troubles started long ago and have not been dealt with yet?' It's not an easy fix; kinda like Northern Ireland, this problem started long ago...and isn't easy to fix.
I'm glad your nephew is doing well...some do. And many don't...products of a cycle I'd guess. Not making excuses for them, just saying few here would trade places just to get the hunting privileges.
Like the people ( White usually ) sniveling about Natives shooting elk in Suffield, just whining because they can't IMO. THe Elk situation in 'The Block' is a travesty...let the Natives shoot all they can use, the Ranchers surrounding 'The Block' sure won't complain.

I'm good with that.

When I was in Moose Jaw ('92-'99) there were regular enough reports around of guys from Manitoba loading reefer trucks with moose from around the Hudson Bay area. Personal use, maybe not so much...

Unfortunately, the opportunists ruin things and make the rep that those that respect the land and what they get from it, have to deal with in the end.

Cheers

and this might be why the COs are looking at enforcing the treaty rights. One of the areas where I hunt this happened, a group from an out of province band showed up 2 weeks before hunting season and shot everything they saw and filled their reefer truck and went home. Good thing that they were road hunters, but there was a lot less game that year, pissed off some of the locals who road hunted there, including the local band when they found out after the fact.

Oh and as for Suffield, I tried to get them to re-introduce wolves, or even Grizley bears to control the Elk... what could go wrong. :)
