The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

Could someone please post a picture of the sight picture you get when you install the XS sight rail? I can't find one on the interweb.

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to find a LEFT-HANDED synthetic stock for my Scout rifle. I have a laminated one now I'm not really impressed with.

McMillan makes a left hand MarkII stock in a couple variations

My deer slaying monstrosity is finally complete. Started with a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, 18" stainless barrel. To it I added:

- Andy's Leather Rhodesian sling
- Andy's Leather 5 round, .30 cal. butt cuff
- Ruger polymer 5 round magazine
- XS Sights full length scout rail
- Weaver 1" see through rings
- Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 with BDC reticle

Well, it looks like I am hooked, thanks to all of you here that posted your valuable insights and experiences. Most great mention goes to 45acpking and Jamie for giving lots and lots of information to prod me into this next addiction! :)

I have AICS magazines (both Accurate Mag and MDT) for both .308 and .223 calibers. I have another SPS TAC AAC-SD with 16.5" .223 rig inside an MDT LSS, so now you see why I'm really x 2 leaning towards that AICS standard dimension'ed magazine. I wanted to build up my collection of hunting and target (paper punching) rigs around said magazine system because I happen to have more than a few of them and that AICS standard will be around for a long time. I can also use the different capacity magazines for different purposes (hunting with a 3 round resin Ruger magazine versus Service Rifle (matches 1 through 16 at NSCC DCRA) 10 rounders).

Currently my scoped deer/moose/big game rifle is an 18.5" .308 Remmy M700 seated in a McMillan Classic 700 stock with Badger Ord bottom AICS metal. I got out both moose/rifle and deer / rifle season with this platform. I wanted to carry a lighter, iron sighted .308 magazine feed, short barrelled rig in the deer woods as well as recce'ing for moose locations. So now you guys got me hooked on a Ruger 6830 .308 GSR Composite.

I found one at board sponsor: JoBrook in Brandon, MB and it's on the way right now.

Silly question, these babies come with ONE or Two of the 10 rd Accurate Mag steelies?

I will advise and post pics once that baby lands likely next week.

Cheers,

Barney

1 Ten round steel mag is in the box with the rifle. (at least that's what was in mine that I bought just a couple of months ago)

Thanks for that input! Greatly appreciated !

Now I was in my basement playing with my MDT (hey, made locally I believe, Chilliwackistan, BC) .308 magazine and I had to struggle to get that 11th round of .308 into place in the feed lips. I also wanted to ensure that the feed lips were tough and not flexible and soft. I was really pleased to know that the polymer MDT uses seems to be tough at the feed lips.

So there you go. Now to go and play with the MDT .223 10 round magazine.....

Of course I had to buy/ order them in FDE colour to satisfy the Fashion Police!

Cheers,

Barney

Hi all,

where's the best place to buy 5 shot polymer magazines?
Prophet-River onlykeep the steel ones.

Thanks,

Seems they are out of stock today, but like anything else they run out of, their notification email system is really effective and I love them for that. I bought my 3 rounders from Wolverine, Ruger OEM and packaged that way. Been really happy with my 2 x 3 rounders during moose/rifle and deer/rifle seasons this past few weeks. :)

Now to wait patiently until my Ruger 6830 from JoBrook shows up. It's worth waiting for. I've been drooling for said "Scout" platform for years (maybe 1983 while an undergrad at Faculty of Edumacation at the University of Alberta). Back then I owned an Ithaca (read: Tikka import) LSA55 with a 3 round magazine (steel), in .308 and it was my moose and deer rig for those undergrad years. I always dreamed of Jeff Cooper's ideas / rifle/scout rig back then, now 30 plus years later, it's gonna become a reality for me. The trouble was, converting an existing M700 or Winnie Model 70 was gonna cost money that I could not afford to sink in (newly graduated then married and then shooting Service Rifle with an M14 by TRW/HRA/WRA/SA for $400 apiece).

I've learned so much over those past 30 years... magazines should be plentiful and in constant supply: AICS pattern magazines are gonna be around for a long time after I'm dead and gone. Ruger cranks out their own (steel by Accurate Magazine) in both steel and polymer. MDT Tac, the makers of the Tac21 and LSS and HS3 crank out their rendition of the 10 round AICS magazine, just head to their site: www.mdttac.ca (Just gotta ensure they are a board sponsor before I hotlink to them).

I always dreamed that my beloved LSA55 would find synthetic stock (still scarce parts for this great shooting Tikka) so that LSA55 just remained a sporter rifle as I traded it in for other firearms after my graduation in 1984. Now we have a purpose built scout rig and life could not be better. :)

I'm grateful! Thanks !

I wish MDT would make the LSS for the ruger it would be a perfect stock for that little gun

in the MDT dealer threads they said fall of 2015 for a ruger gunsite chassis........ haven't checked back with them in a while to see if it came to fruition.
my guess is if enough guys bug them about it , they will get er done ;)

Speaking of stocks like the great MDT LSS (I have a 16.5" Remmy M700 SPS TAC AAC-Sd in one right now)...

Since the Ruger GSR is an M77, can it be bolted into a canoe paddle Ruger Short Action stock? Factory GSR bottom metal easily adapted? Just a thought of a remote project!

What say your GSR and M77 Ruger experts?

Cheers,

Than you Tacticalteacher! I'm now waiting for the notification.

I think the canoe paddle stock would fit but I to would like to know for sure.

Okay, so I've got some time to take some measurements and share with you Scout Rifle lovers out there....

A great report here:

http://www.gunsumerreports.com/review_ruger_m77-gs_p1.php

Have a great read there!

Now about them allen key sizes:

Trigger pull weight: 56 ounces to 64 ounces (3.5 to 4 lbs) That works for me and my gloved hands

Side allen key rear sights: 5/64"
Rear Sight Removal: 3/32"
Rear Tang screw: 5/32"
Front tang screw: 3/16"
Bolt removal Latch assembly: 5/32"

Anybody figure out the size of Allen key I need to remove the bolts and then add/remove the buttstock spacers? I found a Torx key in a little "dime" bag, but no luck getting that bolt/screw out. Suggestions?

Magazine fitment:

This composite rifle loves the AICS magazines, but the Accurate mag 10 rounder has a teeny bit of a rattle, likely training or in competition so that rattle is a moot point. The MDT Tac 10 rounder loves this composite magazine well. Feeds empty brass really well.
Would I be wrong to assume the MDT Tac mags in .223 will work with the .223 version of this Composite Scout Rifle? Who knows?

Time to buy more of the MDT Tac magazines at $40 from their website. I just ordered another .308 and a couple of .223 versions for my coyote bitter...

I already have 2 of the 3 rounders Ruger Factory magazine that I've taken hunting for moose and deer this fall. The fit without ANY slop or lateral play inside the Scout Rifle magazine well. Now I wonder if it's even worth getting a 5 rounder for hunting when I have 2 x 3 rounders and they have been great to carry in the woods.

TTYL,

Cheers,
Barney
