So from time to time we all get a deer which needs a second shot to put it down. i am not thrilled with the idea of having to dispatch a deer a foot away with a 300 grain shotgun slug doing 2000fps.

One, i dont necessarily like deer brains all over my self and my gear. Secondly I dont want to damage more meat than i really have to. Lastly you never know what is under the deer, its head could be hiding a rock.

Having gone through this weekend where someones deer ended up needing three shots to stay down I have decided to "experiment" some.

Hopped in my shot and made one of these adapter thingys. I figure the anemic 38S&W would be about right. I have my choice of 145 or 200 grain bullets. I will be casting these myself out of soft lead.

I will develop the load till it will pass through a piece 3/8" plywood. Worst case scenario it will knock it out long enough to cut the throat :)

Looking forward to the testing phase.

(All this would be easier if you were able to carry a small caliber pistol while you are hunting)

I think it's friggin brilliant. Twice I put a 12ga slug into a deers head from a foot away, both times it was like someone threw a bucket of gore on me. If you make another one, I'd love to beta test it...

Just shoot it a second time, in the head.

Why #### around with this thing?

Do people actually still cut the throats of game animals to "bleed" them?

If it's dead, not much sense. If it's still alive, cooperation from the critter could be an issue. "Bleeding" was great when farm animals were killed with a knife. Some were knocked out first, others were just killed either by cutting the throat or with a knife to the heart. With pigs, cutting the throat allowed gathering of the blood to make blood sausage. If you already knew this, I apologize.

If you are hunting in a shotgun only season, would that adapter not be against the regulations. It may be a shotgun but it is no longer shooting a shotgun shell? Honest question, I don't know.

I have dispatched many animals over the years with a close range head shot. There is no reason to be "a foot away" Head shots are pretty easy shots from 30 ft away.

I don't have a .44 but I reload and cast 38s&w

Do you reload .38 special as well? I bought a set of 12 gauge adaptors and my .40S&W and .38 spl have never been fired. If you are interested I could sell one. They are 7" rifled adaptors, I just have no need for those calibers since I only shoot .44mag, 9mm and .45acp for pistols.
