Picked up an interesting Enfield sporter

I just recently picked up this sporterized No4 Mk1 off the EE. Don't know a heck of a lot about it, just that it was made in England and the serial number starts with AN
The barrel was been shortened to 22" and has a muzzle brake installed...recoil is almost non-existent.

Nice looking sporter. Never seen a Lee Enfield with a muzzle brake. Is it loud at the range? Guys who are shooting of to the side of you may not appreciate the muzzle brake.

Doesn't appear to be much louder with the brake, but ive never fired it without to compare.
Luckily I do most of my shooting on private land..So I'm not worried about the guy next to me...because there isn't anyone lol

Couldn't find any PH. There's several crowns with "BNP" or it might be "BNB" and couple downward pointing arrows. There's also the letter F on the left side of the trigger guard.
The top of the barrel is stamped "made in england"
 
Don't think I've ever seen a brake on a .303 before, I'd guess that was added later on? Wonder if it's a factory sporter or a stock kit? Any maker's name on the butt plate? An old Fajen stock in the collection has the logo in the plastic....
 
"Made in England" might indicate that it is a BSA conversion. I mean that BSA did the conversion and stamped it "Made in England". Might there be a stamp of three stacked rifles on the barrel flat spot just ahead of the receiver?

"MADE IN ENGLAND" is simply the export stamp from after WW2. All Enfields that were commercially exported will have them.

If it was factory sporterized, at some point along the top of the barrel you'll see a name/brand (ie. "SURREY"). If you don't see that then this rifle was privately modified, which would explain the muzzle brake.

Could find a makers name, but it has this logo:

I have a Parker Hale Supreme conversion of a No.4 rifle (Long Branch) The stock overall looks very alike except mine has white line spacers at the buttplate and at a black cap on the pistol grip. The stipple pattern on the buttplate is the same as is the size and position of the circle for the logo, but mine has a PH logo. PH got these stocks from an Italian manufacturer who could also have supplied them to any other company making milsurp sporters.

Same here.
I've got a sporterized No1Mk3 that i use as my primary hunting rifle.
Cost me a whopping $90 + scope and mount and will shoot 1.5" groups with my hand loads..Can't beat that.

No brand names that I can find. So you're probably right about it being a private job, but I have a feeling that the muzzle brake was a recent modification.

I agree, it doesn't seem right..but it's too late to go back now :)
It will also make a nice moose rifle for my father who doesn't like recoil.
