Coyote,Would you hunt with a 22 Stinger?

Why do some consider the 223 the minimum for yotes, what about everything from the hornet to the triple deuce? I think there are many many hunters that would be able to say that the 223 is not the minimum, nor maximum.

They are thin skinned and very easy to dispatch, we aren't talking about cape buff for petes sake!! Lol

Hmmm, interstitial concept.
Tuesday morning Union scheduled coffee break thread, Cape Buffalo Coyote defence thread...best gun/cartridge choice?
Target of opportunity or dedicate hunt?
Thanks Cleft.

CCI stingers were a very accurate bullet in all my .22's and my favorite beaver load.No reason on earth with good shot placement they wouldn't work on a coyote.Harold

Would I use it to shoot a coyote? Absolutely, at no more than 50 yards (preferably closer), with careful shot placement and nothing better at hand to use.

But choose it to hunt coyotes? Not a chance.

I have shot quite a few coyotes, 22lr when in snare or trap. I like my light hornet when calling and shots are close. 243 when I have over 200 yards of space between us. I have seen, at my hand sorry, coyotes hit hard go too far to be right. All animals deserve the right to die quickly. A 22 will do the job in the right conditions, after all we use them to butcher, but it is not the cartridge to hunt with.

I've shot plenty of coyotes with numerous calibers from .22LR to .30-06 and I would not shoot one again with anything under .222. A .22LR will kill them when called in close, but they can still run a long way even after being solidly hit and you can lose them. .243 is a favorite.

No I wouldn't. For every guy that says "it dropped like a rock" there is no doubt more that ran off to die a painful death or could no longer hunt to survive. Not against hunting them but hunting means killing the animal as fast as possible. If you don't have the proper caliber don't hunt, period.

Have used .22 Stingers on coyotes and beavers. The animal dies but not quickly enough for my liking. I have also used 17Hmr for coyotes and sold it off to buy a 223. I think if you stick with a centre fire cartridge or the 22WMR and good shot placement, it makes a humane kill.

Last coyote I killed was shot with a 22 SHORT from an old Winchester pump action rifle. It was eyeballing our lambs, and the rifle is what I happened to have close by at that moment. One shot kill, but it wasn't that far away. :)

I woudnt use a .22 on a coyote. I tried Stingers on a beaver at close range, put 3 rounds into it. 1 in the head, 1 the neck and 1 in the back and the bastard still got away. I am sure it bled out and died back in its lodge, but not the kind of kill I like. 22WMR would be the smallest I would go.

Killed lots of coyotes over the years, first one fell to a 22 mag at roughly 125 long paces. Hit him in the shoulder, down he went but came right back up, required a quick follow up shot to the head to drop him for good. Since then it has been 222 rem, 243, 25-06 or 308. The 25-06 gives almost instant spectacular kills when the bullets hits a vital area, a bit tough on the pelts though if you are collecting for fur.

Miss caramel took 3 over the years when they go tru the alley between the barn and the house, her little 94-22 never needed more than one round of Stinger and all 3 were shoot at 25 yards or less and all fell in their track... Very potent combo and short distance proposition... JP.
