25-06 A dead Calibur ?

I'm not disagreeing...I have no clue, just tellin ya where he was shot

I didn't take it that you were not agreeing with me. In fact, I thought it more interesting than ever that he was shot west of Calgary. If it is an Alaskan variety it would mean a great expansion of their range.
Do you know a game biologist that you could show the pictures to, or preferably show him/her the antlers?
Maybe there is a game biologist on here who could chime in.

I have had my 25.06 since 1977. It is a bi-centennial model of the #1b Ruger. It is a tack driver and like Harv, I have dumped moose with it as well as deer and coyotes.
On Harv's moose. That moose is definitely a prime bull, meaning in the 7 to 9 year bracket. Judging by the length of the tines, I would say that his age is to the upper end and may even be pushing 10 years. He is still searing ample black so he is not beyond that age range and it also indicates that he is not under 5 years. We can see Harv's arms outstretched but it is difficult to say how far they are out stretched. I would estimate that the spread is in the low 40" range and that certainly is not an Alaskan Moose for a prime bull.
I would expect it to be Shiras or maybe Canadian.
And that folks is my 2¢ worth.

We have moose in MB that look like that. They must really be working their way south and east. ;)

Harold, the Souper is to the 25-06 what a .308 is to a 30-06. There is no magic, just a good moderate cartridge. But not a 25-06.

The 25-06 and the quarter bore are anything but dead. Its a hunting bore, plain and simple and it works.

As for Harv's moose, it is in the northern most part of the area that Shiras are expected to live in, and that antler configuration looks much like all of the southern Alberta moose I have ever seen shot. I am not of the age or experience that H4831 or Why Not? are but I would argue that it is anything but an Alaskan. Great bull again Harv.

I have a 48" that has the exact same look.

Looks pretty typical of the Alberta foothills to me too. We have land west of Millarville and we get bulls on there with that exact look, also used to live in Grande Cache for awhile and same moose there.

I'm suspicious of all the classifications of moose, Shiras in particular, I have trouble believing that any in Canada are truly Shiras- or that the term Shiras even means much in Canada. Everything is a spectrum, with blurred borders, so while I believe there are Shiras-pattern moose I also find it dubious any "purebred" examples have existed in Canada for a long time, if ever. Quite a fight amongst the outfitters over the Shiras classification, as everyone wants to call their moose Shiras. If you have "Canada" moose with a slightly Shiras shape in southern BC or southwestern Alberta, and fall inside the bubble permitted, you can charge a bunch more. Moose populations mix and meld in sizes, and some have come out of Ontario that blow my mind despite watching Yukon / BC border moose at work all the time. Pockets of bigger moose exist smack in the middle of smaller populations, Shiras looking Moose can be found around Prince George, and brutes in the Alberta foothills. I think we're just viewing nature's mixed bag, rather than any specific delineations.

I am with Ardent once again. Having hunted moose from the BC/Aylin border to Quebec, and living on moose meat, I would have to say Northern Ontario has the largest bodies moose, and you will find examples of each classification almost anywhere.... Though not in the "bubbles"

I have to agree with you on all of this, also, the moose sub species are really mixed up!
In the 1950s I flew on the big BC wolf culling program, as well as flying a biologist on the first official moose counting done in BC and from a low flying ski equipped air craft, we saw a good variety of moose, even back then.

Even though I recently purchased two 25-06 rifles I really haven't had time to work up a load for them partly because I am so busy but more to that I'm into a major 270 cal resurge in my life right now but it's called 6.8mm = cartridge is called 6.8SPC plus I refinished/stocked my old built in 1958 Husqvarna in 270 Weatherby.

Parent case for the 6.8spc is a 30 Rem which is a rimless 30-30 that is shortened and necked down to 270 cal.

I shoot 95gr TTSX @ 2960fps and 110gr V-Max/Accubonds/TSX/Prohunters @ 2750fps.

While we are talking 25-06 does anyone have a recommended load for 90gr Sierra Blitzking I'm heading out to my inlaws in Alberta for Christmas this year my escape plan is to hunt coyotes while I'm there plan on taking the 6.8spc for out to 300 - 400 yard and would love to extend that range to 500 yards with the 25-06.

Cartridges of the World claims the 25 Souper is near 25-06 ballistics ........don't know for sure? Probably as good as the Roberts at least.........Harold

Hmm 27 cal does NOTHING for me - I shot a 270 Win for years but never really LOVED it now its a 30-06 - still Boring ! lol I think it needs to be a 338-06 soon ! :) RJ

For the sake of conversation what doesn't a .270 do...? I'm guiding a lot of mountain goat all of a sudden, and frankly there isn't a better cartridge for mountain goat, sheep, and the odd long crack at wolves from this fellow's perspective. It's the perfect blend of recoil, blast, Weatherby like trajectory, and off the shelf ammo at a dusty home hardware. I am a little confused at all thrashing the .270 takes. It's one of the best cartridges we've got on your average hardware store's shelf, it reaches further than any hunter except Dogleg I've hunted with yet, and it kicks like a powder puff- same as a .25 actually with my current load of the 110gr TTSX. Shoots as flat as a .257 Weatherby with that load, to boot.

What's not to like? ;)

Is it legal for a non resident to hunt coyotes in Alberta?
