I have been offered a Colt Python made in 1974....in very good condition.....however,it has a 4" barrel putting it in the prohib class!!.....can anyone tell me what the fair market value of this Pistol is in Canada?....Thank You

IIRC, there was one listed in the 12(x) EE for $1K recently. Seemed to sell fairly quickly.

NAA.

Way too much for a prohib imho, just because it sold quickly doesn't equate to the seller realizing the $1000 either. In Canada there are far fewer buyers than there are prohibited guns (buyers market). This drastically drives the price down. Generally revolvers in the .38/.357 calibers that are prohibited are realizing between $200- $350...this is a Colt, so add what? $100, maybe $200? Anymore and you are overpaying.

Is it possible to change it to restricted? I was asked about the same type of revolver by a local guy who had a licence lapse. It's important to him.

I have unfortunately noticed that prohibited class guns seem to be creeping up in "asking" price. I cannot explain it as it makes no sense really. The conservatives-in-name-only did nothing about the prohib class while they were in majority, & you can expect the status quo or worse under the Liberals.
With few exceptions, prohibited class handguns are not worth more. Lugers, Pythons, Anacondas, DiamondBacks, are probably the exceptions.
That being said, a nice 4" Python is probably worth C$1000.00.

Worth and what they sell for hatman just might not be the same fgure.

BNIB 4" Pythons with complete packaging, papers, hangy tags etc:

blued = $1,500 to $1,800+ (put a premium on early "hollow lug" guns)
nickel or bright stainless = $1,600 to $2,000+

I will gladly pay $1,000 for ANY 4" Python in NRA excellent or better condition! Ask the people who own these guns...they have a better grasp on true market value and are not guessing. PM the guys who've posted their collections in the "Show us your Pythons" thread.

Thanks but I'll trust recent market activity any day. Just because I've had one for a few years, doesn't mean I have a clue of current market value.

Yes, but as you pointed out, a Python owner will always take a look at any Python listed for sale. And forgive me for saying, but why tell the OP "...seemed to sell around the 1k mark" and in the same thread say "...doesn't mean I have a clue of current market value." ???

You could buy a 6 or 8" barrel from the US.
Won't get into prohib values but Numrich used to have Python barrels. I know that the gun
will not be 100% as issued, but Python's are not SAA's and I believe that getting it classified as restricted
is the way to go.

"I" used as generalization. Substitute with "someone". Seemed to sell = moved at what it was listed

Sure an existing owner may pay more attention, but you make the assumption that an owner is the only one that can accurately value the market. BS. If fact, and not surprisingly, some owners completely overvalue the market... I am on EE, gunbroker and other Canadian used market sites regularly, so with some items, I have a reasonable idea what is moving and for what. Clearly others who have posted here have seen the same activity. Its not rocket science ;-)

What you personally think they are worth and what the market demonstrates, may not be the same...

For 12/6 handguns it's a buyers market, i would really like to buy a 4" Python but will never go more than 1K for it.

.

Please show me where I said this? By virtue the OP posted a thread asking for opinion draws the inference he is not expecting a unanimous single answer?!

So you felt slighted by my suggestion to the OP because you feel you have a better grasp on 4" Python values
due to your regularly watching the classifieds? How do you determine what the seller and buyer ultimately agree to on price? How many 4" Pythons have you ACTUALLY bought or sold in the past year? What condition were they in? Do you own any 4" Pythons now? I agree with your position that a Python owner does not necessarily a qualified appraiser make...as much as a frequent classified browser does either.

To the OP: IMO, there is no revolver better looking or balanced than a blued 4" Python in pristine condition. It will spend more time in your hands being admired and appreciated for it's build quality and "feel" than it will actually being shot on the range:cool: Buy it at the best price you can and enjoy!

You were suggesting people were guessing with their estimates. I was simply pointing out that that was not the case. No big deal

Had a 4" King Cobra years ago then moved it along. Have shot the Python and would be interested in adding one to the stable but like the vast majority of 12(6) owners here I see the value maxing out at a grand.
