Whats the hardest kicking gun you ever fired?

.45/120 built on a light frame falling bock...

3.5" turkey load from a 5 pound H&R Pardner single shot.

Lightweight .375 H+H Dumoulin Mauser 98...from a bench...but a 1/2 inch group at 50 yards with open sights.

300gr Solid through a custom 375/300 built on a commercial Mauser action with a hard rubber buttpad from a bench. String of 7 is enough to give a headache. Nice gift from my uncle.

.308 Norma Magnum at age 16, it's the only Hi-power rifle I've ever fired (only once;)) w/o hearing protection. My ears rang with a painful squeal not allowing me to hear people talk for 40 minutes.

It did damage my hearing permanently, but fortunately not in a functional way as I'm still able to pass professional hearing exams, although it is noted (every time I get my ears tested) that I've been exposed to an explosion or other very loud noise that has caused an impairment.

Needless to say I've never forgotten my hearing protection since.

Cheers D

Was this in an enclosed space? Many shots have been taken at game without hearing pro.

Oh and to answer the OP a 7 lb 10 oz .450 Nitro Express 3 1/4". It was a little ridiculous before I added a lead tube to the buttstock and scoped it to bring it to 9.5 lbs.

When I was young, I shot a 416 rigby that almost knocked me off the bench. I would have to say though, I had a 340 wby mk5 delux that for some reason was violent. It kicked the crap out of me. I have a .458, 416 rem and my custom "light weight" 404 Jeffery that are pussy cats compared the that damn 340.....

I still have nightmares about the 585 Nyati I shot. 750gn Solid bronze bullets.... The most ignorant rank-@ssed butt kicking recoil I have ever ever shot.

It took a few seconds for the heart's sinus rhythm to return to normal... and about 3 weeks for the bruising to appear...

Just an open gravel pit (about 30M/100' wide).

I do understand people have shot hi-power firearms w/o hearing protection and w/o experiencing any negative effects, however on this occasion as I suspect happens far to often a permanent hearing impairment was the result of not wearing hearing protection while firing a hi-power rifle.
Please understand that just because you do not notice any issues from shooting w/o hearing protection on (once, twice or more) does not mean all is well. There can also be an accumulative effect that can be responsible for creating hearing impairment(s) as is the case with most shooters, even those who wear hearing protection at all times.

If it were not for the pain and squealing noises after the shot I would not have known that any hearing damage had happened because in day to day life I have never experienced any noticeable hearing problems as a result (once the initial pain subsided).

My particular hearing damage is only recognized during a professional hearing examination which many people may never actually receive.

Cheers D
