Question about the M14s shorty

Go for it! I've had mine for 3 years now and I love it. No problems to speak of. It's for sure my favourite rifle in the safe. I believe this one is a 2009. I've done most of the recommended upgrades to it and it shoots like a dream.
 
The only issue I have that I know of is barrel indexing, poor machining for some parts (flash hider and front sight canted to the right to make up for the over indexed barrel.) and the finish easily scratch off so rust appear quickly when not cleaned after shooting, especially in the gas cylinder. Other than that I had no functionality issue.
 
Theres a reason Marstar doesn't sell the shorties....

They QC all their rifles before shipping them to Canada.... Apparently (from a post by Johnone) very few 18.5" rifles passed their "tests", so they didn't bring any in....

I myself am a little disappointed in the quality of the current crop of the shorties currently available.... I went through 12 rifles at the LGS (I was buying one for a friend), only 2 were what I consider "worth owning" (and then only after 3 hrs at the bench), 5 were unsafe to shoot or inoperable from the box.....

Marstar at least has a fairly exhaustive QC protocol in place to ensure the rifle is in spec and safe to operate....
 
Mine is a 2011 production. It has been through Tactical Teacher's (old Hungry's) clinic.

New op rod, new Wolff springs, gas ring reversed, M1 iron sight installed, barrel indexing and headspace spec out OK.

155 rounds down range with absolutely no issues.
 
I have [ahem] three Norinco shorties. They all worked fine out of the box...headspacing, indexing, fit and function, no problems. For my own satisfaction I replaced the rear sights, the op rod spring guides and took them to TacticalTeacher's clinics for tweaking. Now I like them all so much I can't bear the thought of selling any of them off, despite not being able to rationalize having three.... [One is a CanAm Socom 18...if you can find one, jump on it...].
 
I bought a shorty from Canada Ammo almost 2 years ago now. It was perfect out of the box. Earlier this year I found a GI Fiberglass stock on the EE and put it in it and yesterday I finally got around to removing the welded FH and swapping it out for one with a Bayonet lug that I ordered from the US. I did put a UTG handguard rail on it as well. The only other mod was I had a local machinist make a shorter Gas Plug for it a while back so I can actually put my Bayonet on the rifle if I want to.

I haven't done anything else to it other that put rounds down range and buy more mags. :p

Interesting, I'd never heard that before. I'm going to go take a closer look at my older 22" poly and my 2013-ish 18.5" Norc.

What I do know is, right now my 18.5" out shoots my 22", using Norc ammo, iron sights, off a bench. Both rifles had good headspace out of the box, and both have been through a Hungry Clinic.
