Is laser sight (not the reflective red dot sight, the real laser pointer sight) allowed in IPSC Open division?

too slow for sight acquisition, and also hard to see outdoors. Better off with iron sights, as you will spend too much looking for the laser dot.

Reason why dot scopes work so well in Open class is you don't focus on the dot, you focus on the target and let the dot jump into the sight picture. Also with frame mounted dot sights too, the slide mounted ones have too much movement to try to find the dot in your peripheral vision.

What would be the practical reasons that will make me think twice before using laser dot?

For starters, the laser might reflect off a shiny surface and hit a spectator in the chest, but not any ordinary spectator, one who just finished watching a SWAT movie marathon weekend.
Seeing that laser on his chest, his mind starts racing and instinctively yells "SNIPER" and hits he deck.
In doing so, he smacks his head on a stage prop and is now bleeding all over the range.
Rushing over to help the guy, another spectator slips on the blood and hits his head...domino effect, soon everyone has a bleeding head.

You want that on your conscious?
Just because you wanted to be cool and attach a high speed low drag laser to your gun?

Happy new year!

I think this is actually a worthwhile discussion.

People do use lasers to aim their weapons in real combat situations.
And I have seen people use them in unsanctioned fun shooting matches.

It's worth discussing their limitations for competition usage.

I agree! I get on target with a laser real quick.

Sounds like you've already convinced yourself you want to do this.... So go ahead and give it a try... no one is stopping you.

It terms of practical reasons why this isn't ideal, consider shooting in bright sun, at Red or black targets, shooting in the rain with bags on, lasers movement at 25y vs sight movement, speed, etc.

I've shot with a laser attached to my Shadow, not in an ipsc match, but played with it none the less. Not just once but tried it several times....... Its a silly way to shoot. Constantly looking for the dot is time consuming. The only way its better is if the gun is unavailable to be raised to your sight plain, i.e your putting your hand around a corner and don't want to be exposed. If your outdoors in the day it's totally pointless. The only point I can see to using a laser is it's fear factor, in the real world who wants a red dot on their forehead.

Had a guy shoot an ODPL match using a laser...
It really didn't look that easy.
Kinda slow because I think he was aiming by following or trying to find/keep track of the little dancing red dot rather than looking down his pistol...

Nothing stopping you from running the laser, accept fear of ridicule and common sense. But if you want to try one out go to the range with a timer. Or even set up some dry fire training with it in your house, if having people tell you it's slower won't convince you prove that's it's faster with a timer.

Guy ran one in a 3Gun match last year, by the second stage he had it turned off cause he said himself it felt slower than just using irons.

There is a reason why they don't use lasers in competition, or they would have been used already.

It's because they are slow, and as i said before if you focus on your target you will be slow too. Ask any top competitor

Nothing to add that hasn't already been said, except to say that it was fun to play with in the dim basement, but out on a bright range, I put it away before I embarrassed myself.
