Is that why ATRS refuses to build a restricted version of the MH or the MV?
The way the RCMP lab has been trying to reclass things you don't want any association with a restricted version at all. Just because they can simply make a sub entry doesn't mean they will and just because we got lucky enough to do NR conversions with the ACR doesn't mean they'll let you do it with a different rifle.
Who's going to spend this much money on a restricted rifle like this anyway? We may not be as lucky as we were with the ACR either. The ACR pretty much uses an AR barrel with a slightly smaller gas port making aftermarket conversion barrels easy, the MDR may use a proprietary barrel extension so we won't be able to do NR conversions until they get around to making them at the factory.
Disagree all you want but sometimes a little patience pays off big in the end and rushing something to the table will screw you in the long run once they already have it in their head that it's restricted.
Well I think ATRS doesn't want to build a shorty MH or MV because there are a ton of much cheaper restricted similar guns that already exist, the AR15 and AR10/SR25/DPMS GII etc... so it wouldn't be viable for them to offer a bare bones basic 3000 dollar rifle that you could have ALL the bells and whistles on an AR15 for that price or less. But their reasons are their own, and fear of the RCMP has definitely limited a lot of options on things.
Now as far as the MDR is concerned, one importer could get one rifle imported as a restricted FRT and then once the rifle is 'restricted by barrel length' then a sub entry can be made with as much as a verifiers report or at the minimum send a rifle in (and like the Modern Varminter) it's a couple month process to get approved instead of 2-3 years. There would be no need to get a barrel change done or anything, just get the ball rolling!
As much as we hate how the RCMP treat us, the guidelines in the firearms act ARE clear. If a gun is classified as restricted by barrel length only, then the RCMP are legally required to have a non-restricted FRT for a proper barrel length. The Swiss Arms carbines are a perfect example of this, or the ACR, or the USC45 carbine or the Beretta CX4 Storm. ALL of those are restricted guns that came in and got non-restricted FRT's made with 18.5"+ barrels on them. Once the FRT exists, then Desert Tech makes the 18.75" variants and a new FRT is made. Done!
Or we can wait 2 years for Desert tech to get the long barrel versions done, then wait for 2 or 3 years for the RCMP to verify it... instead of getting one ASAP and cutting 2-3 years out of that process!
I'm not going to get into the swiss arms debate, but the ONLY reason the RCMP did what they did is because of one vendor being spiteful. The RCMP warned them not to push, and they still did. Even the RCMP wanted to sweep it under the rug....
