Looking for a black hunting rifle for deer in BC.

If you are stuck on looking like Rambo hunting deer then find whatever feeds your GI Joe in 223 Rem.

Then go to the LGS and grab a couple boxes of Hornady Full Boar (50 grain GMX) and keep your shots to 100 yards or less where the impact velocity will allow the GMX to properly expand and do it's job (and it won't do much/any meat damage at all if you put the bullet where you should).

Not my first choice for deer, but would use it in a pinch.

And no, I'm not one of these guys that hunts deer with a 300 Wby, I shoot a 243 with 87 grain SST's for Bambi.

But I still wouldn't go this route. If you want something for hunting deer buy a cheap Axis in a deer caliber and get your tactical rifle for shooting pop cans in the dump. You and the deer would be better off in the long run.
 
I don't think the dismissive and insulting tone of some of the replies to the OPs question are very helpful, nor do they reflect how any of the rest of us would like to be treated.

To the OP:

233/5.56 for deer comes up periodically, and the consensus is its too small. The deer will die, but the risk is a protracted period of suffering, and not retrieving the animal.

.308 Winchester is 7.62mm NATO (essentially) and it is therefore also a "tactical" cartridge. It's also perfect for deer.

If tactical is what floats your boat, I suggest again looking at an MDT chassis. Say, an LSS.

Pick a 308 bolt gun, buy a chassis to match, and you've got a tactical hunting rifle. A genuinely bad-ass tactical hunting rifle.
 
If you want a light cartridge for deer and little to no recoil there are better choices than 223.in 243,25-06,7mm-08,257 Roberts. I've use a 25wssm for about 20 years. Yes 223 work's great with a decent ammo like Hornady 223 60 gr interlock American white tail,but shot placement is everything. I shot both my WT buck and muely in the neck this year and neither took a step straight down. WT with the 223,muely the 25wssm.

If .223/5.56 is legal for deer where you are get a non-restricted black rifle of your choice and use a ttsx. Many many people use this south of the border for deer with no problems. Know your limits. Know the rifle's limits. Know the cartridge's limits.

I've shot animals with a keltec RFB and an m14. They died. Granted these are 308.

You could also get an XCR-M in 308 or an XCR-L in 6.8 SPC or 7.62x39. And the cream of the crop is the Alberta tactical rifle modern hunter in 308, 260, 7-08 (dunno if they make them in 243, 338 fed or 358 win).
 
With all due respect, if you read through the thread, you got the knowledge you were looking for....

5.56 / .223 is light for deer unless you are hunting tiny blacktails....

.308 is better, even in it's military equivalent.... as long as you use hunting bullets...
 
I was leaning towards that military look for a huntin rifle and went with this:

My go to black rifle was actually OD green it was a Robinson Arms XCR-L had uppers in 223 & 6.8spc sold it this last fall to a fellow east of BC.

With the 6.8spc upper installed I loaded it with 95gr TTSX with H322 powder @ 2825fps or AA2200 powder @ 2880fps.

I shot 3 mule deer with this combo all three where DRT longest shot was 130 yards.
