How long does a S&W 629 last? Let's find out! 13K+ now

Correct, give that man a cookie!

FYI triple base has nitroguanidine added, things I learn on my QL6A :p

Triple base? That's a thing? Damn you! Now I have to find what nitroguanidine is.
My wife is going to be mad when I tell her I can't do dishes because I have to do some research....:runaway:

I picked up a 1991 mod 29-5 (endurance package) waiting for transfer now, I plan to load some medium, medium hot loads for it. I wonder how long it will last. I went for the -5 since it has the endurance package Smith and Wesson started doing that time. Still has a square but frame and hammer mounted firing pin no mim parts and target everything.

Nice piece and I hope the answer is "forever" because having expensive high powered guns fail catastrophically sucks big time!

Any plans on moving to a more powerful revolver after you get bored of the 44mag Barry?

Not in the foreseeable future. Anything bigger and spookier would be several times more expensive to shoot.
And besides, I'm still trying to figure out how to make the stupid .44 bullets go where I want. But I'm starting to get the feeling that it's me and not them.

FWIW.

Ammo loaded to Bang, BANG, and BOOM. In the same cylinder full. Is probably not conducive to best accuracy.

I find best accuracy. With target loads that have very little variation from shot to shot.

I have no interest in aggravating my Arthritis further.

I feel no obligation to shoot my SRH in .454 Casull with earth shaking loads.
.45 Colt level is good for me. AND, I can hit what I aim at.
If a bear shows up. I have some full house loads ready.

You are of course free to enjoy your gun as you see fit.

Got some 180XTP because it's $5 cheaper/100 than the 240s. We'll see.

Be very careful about checking COAL with those. I have the sneaking suspicion that the ones they sell for reloading aren't the same quality as the ones they use for their own ammo because I found huge (like .030") variations loading them.

About 2/3 of the rounds I shoot are a nice consistent even gentle load. The mixed bag thing is for when I find myself starting to tense or flinch after shooting some hotter stuff.
Or sometimes just for laughs or demonstration but it's not an every time thing.

Ah, my friend. We may have different interpretations of "gentle" loads.
In any event, it's all in good fun!

Good point, "gentle" might not be the right word when talking about .44mag. Kinda like getting hit by a "gentle" truck.

Compared with a 16 inch naval shell all 44 mags are gentle. On the other hand a bit difficult to hold a 16" naval gun, now that would really be a handgun...... put your 50's to shame. Oops probably shouldn't have said that someone might try to do it.

And another 228 rounds. 178 of the IMR4227 and 50 using Winchester 296 which is supposed to be identical to H-110. And certainly appears to be.

Took a new shooter today (4th one so far, not quite 1 a month but close to 1 every 6-7 weeks) and he fired close to 50 rounds of it. We also went through 400 rounds of reloaded 9mm and 59 (found #60 mixed in the .44 brass) rounds of 7.62x39mm.

Now I know why SKS's have such a following. Pretty cool to get that much value for so little $.

Otherwise, everything is holding up fine so far. 3180 rounds through the 629 and well over 7K through the SR9.

Another 316 rounds and my first reloading screw up. 177 rds of 21.5gr of IMR4227 (1 piece of cracked brass was scrapped), 50 rds of 23,5gr of H-110 and WLP and 89 rds of 23.5 gr of W-296 with S&B primers. Would have been 90 but I found 1 round that the primer wasn't seated deep enough and set it aside for rework. I'm finding that the primer pockets on a few of the Starline brass are a little tight and although I've caught every other one, I did miss one. *sniff* And I wish I had taken 4 more rounds with me, so close.

OK Dirtbarry, we haven't heard from you for a while. Hope the new gun didn't blow up on you.

Still alive and well. It was snowing hard last Sunday so I pussed out and sat around in my housecoat and slippers drinking coffee instead of going shooting. Then there's been a few other distractions but I ordered some more bullets and scored a sweet deal on some more powder (Thanks Jeff!). And considering what an incredible stress-fest this week has been, cranking off a few hundred rounds this weekend is going to be sweet.

I think you need to list the 629 on the EE as nearly new and start looking for a 460 or 500. The .44 should feel like a .22 by now! LOL! Aren't you bored shooting it yet?

Personnally I don't think I would be bored with that many hot 44 mags but my shoulder would sure be sore. I can only manage 50 commercial rounds before my shoulder gives out. A 454 Casull might be enough so long as there is no muzzle brake.
