Shout out to FRATRI.....

Congrats on the yote. Looks pretty nice.

I've only brought in one coyote on vocals and never got the shot off. Maybe I'm real crappy at it. How are you guys howling? What howls are you using?

Mine are all carver predator calls....

From left to right, African blackwood and resin rabbit distress, cocobola coaxer, Box elder burl "big dog howler"....

Nice lookin hand calls there.

I like starting a set off with a howl of some kind. The one call I use on my ecaller alot with great success right now, is the "female coyote deep howl" I only play it for about 15-20 seconds at a time. Until she sounds like shes done a lil set of howls. Youll kind of know when you play it a few times. I do that a couple times, then jump into some kind of distress calls if something hasnt come in by then.

Im NOT good with my hand calls yet, but Im using them more often then last year. I use the hand call mostly right now when I kind of sneak into a area where I know theres a coyote or two and give a little howl to mostly make them poke their heads out for a look see.

That's the one I've been playing with as well. Trying on the open reed as well but like I said not much luck just howling them in. Distress seems to be what works best for me.

Superbrad those are beautiful looking calls. I have heard of carver but I guess I've never seen a picture of them. Compared to my plastic ones those are works of art.

Doc.... visit careverpredatorcalls dot com..... the price will rival your plastic stuff (not that the plastics won't work)

Congrats on the coyote.

I think using the hand calls with the e caller really spikes the coyote curiousity. He hears the distress in one spot, Then its in a different spot shortly after. Hand calls give so much more emotion too compaired to the looped e-caller sound. It really brings them out for a shot.

I know I have always had more success using both. I will howl back and forth to my foxpro with my hand howlers. I have had many hard chargers come flying out looking for the intruder coyote in their territory.

You guys are starting to bring on the itch, I gotta get out there. :D

Damn I forgot to try out both again today. arg Ill try to think of it tomorrow...

Did get another to come in with the female coyote deep howl today around the 8 minute mark. A magpie gave its location away this time.

Found out today that the hutterites are doing alot of trapping around my area, I guess that might be a reason Im not seeing the numbers I should be. :(

I got out and tried both. Didn't fly for me. Did a stand of howls no go. Was headed home and last minute decided to make one more stand and took a big male. He came in to distress (rabbit) on the open reed 'lil dog.

Ordered a carver coco big dog howler last night. At least this coyote will pay for the call and some change left over.

I was wondering if there is a primer on the basics of setting up for coyotes, and use of the e-caller. I have lots of coyotes here, and a Foxpro Spitfire, but really no idea what call to use, volume, duration, all that.
Thx
Tim

My 33% success rate just occurred with rabbit distress muted every 2-3 minutes..... I am hoping the hand calls will improve on that....

I think there are a bunch of videos on YouTube. Watch what they do. How they set up, wind direction etc.
off the top of my head I would say there are two things you want to trigger in predators. Food drive and territory protection. To start I would attempt to call them in with some type of rabbit call. Doesn't matter if that type of rabbit doesn't live in the area. Try different volumes and durations.
Read about hunts on here. Like fratri's post. He is showing you his terrain, wind direction and stand location. It's not just a story it's the blueprint of his hunt. You can learn from successful and unsuccessful hunts as well.
Wind is important. Most people call with a cross wind or the wind in their face. Reason is in theory if the coyote smells you it's not coming in.
Be quiet. Don't slam doors and talk. Don't make noise.
Wear camo if possible. I do. Some guys are happy in their carhart jackets.
Don't give up! You may get one the first time out. It may take 20 hunts.

Go to varmint ALS website. Predator masters as well.

Kerry Carver must be drawing up some good business from this forum alone... I am looking forward to getting out this Friday and Saturday.

Do you guys prefer the morning or evening hunt for Coyotes?

MAGPIES ARE A COYOTE HUNTERS BEST FRIEND!! They give away a coyotes location more often than not and when they are not giving their position away they often draw them in to find out what all the fuss is about. Unlike the born and raised westerners who seem to loathe Magpies this transplant loves the little buggers. I get hours and hours of entertainment from them.

Prefer mornings only because I can get in more sets before I need to be home...
I do afternoons as well but those are usually limited to one set and usually can only do those in the last 30 minutes of hunting time, if I get to go at all.

Anytime is good but mornings (usually mean weekends) gives me more time to hunt where evenings (usually after work) only allow a shorter time to do it.

Which are more productive? Short answer.... The ones you can do more often... :)
