Tikka T-3 Stainless or Winchester featherweight in 7-08?

I have tried tikkas... I will give credit, they are a nice gun. All of the guys I know that own them really like them.
With that being said, I am a model 70 fan. I have a featherweight in 308, and absolutely love it. I already have plans to buy two more... A standard sporter, and a super grade.

Another big Model 70 fan here. They're terrific rifles!

The Tikkas have just never done it for me.

Same here. I have a fwt 30-06 and a supergrade 7mm-08. Both feel like better quality then I paid for them. With the price of tikka's these days I find it hard to see why. Plastic fantastic and for $450-500 would be a great deal.

Comparing a Tikka to an M70 is like comparing a Cavalier to a Cadillac....

The Cavalier will get you where you need to go ... The Cadillac will get you where you need to go in style...

The difference is that a Cavalier doesn't cost almost as much as a Cadillac.....

I think it's more of a Subaru Forester Vs. Toyota 4Runner.

Neither is the pinnacle of luxury, both do what you need done. One is "better" and more expensive.

Lots and lots of great replies.

I have had at least 5 CRF featherweights in the past 3 wood stainless (2-270win & a 308win) and a wood blued 280 rem and wood blued 243 WSSM all shot well and I've never had a rifle that fit me better and I really like the 3 position safety and CRF. It is the drop hinge mag that is the breaking point. Everytime I have to fumble about with the loose cartridges when loading and unloading it frustrates me. I know the benefits of the drop hinge mag but none of them overcomes the convenience of the detachable mag for me. I grew up with detachable mags and I have 2-3 mags for every gun as I just find it a really convent way to carry my extra ammo. I have never forgotten one, lost one or had one fall out on me and I have 2-3 mags for every gun as I just find it a really convent way to carry my extra ammo, I'm sure others have though and it certainly is a possibility.

I've had several t-3's over the years as well ranging from 300WSM to 243's and they all functioned perfectly and shot really well, but they are very generic and lifeless firearms to me, never was able to form an attachment to them, so that is why I'm torn.

I thank everyone for there replies so far, it is giving me plenty to reflect on.

Lol... fair enough...

I like Rugers, but then again I am really more of a jeep / landcruiser kind of guy.....

the deal breaker with me and Tikkas is that there are no short actions for short action calibers.... kind of screams mass production....

I think the M70 is "better", sure, but how deep does the water have to be to drown in it? Once it's over your head, do you need another mile under your toes?

We shouldn't fall into the trap of saying one gun isn't good just because another is better. There are much better rifles than the M70, too.

Tikkas fit me like no other rifle, and I'm satisfied (subjectively, *I* am satisfied) with the value proposition (features/money), and nobody is going to say a Tikka isn't "good enough" unless they've got an emotional attachment to a feature the Tikka doesn't have, like all-metal construction or something.

I really like my M70 extreme weather.

Buy the rifle that appeals to you more. You'll be in good shape either way.

I was on the fence about that when I bought the 70. All my other rifles have the detachable magazine, and I always liked that. Turned out I don't mind the floor plate at all.

I have a t3 in 30-06, and two model 70's in 7mm-08. I can say the tikka is an awesome gun but holds no value for me compared to my winchester. If the house is on fire I'd grab the Winchesters and let the tikka burn (I guess all that plastic would melt).

I have had 7-08's in both guns. The Tikkas flat out shot anything i fed them. Didn't matter if it was 120gr or 160gr. Also the Tikka trigger was better.
The 7-08 was a little picky on loads but I finally found a load with RL 15 and 140gr ballistic tips that was the most accurate 7-08 I have evr shot.

I was also considering these options. My buddies mostly all shoot Tikka.. They never ever complain about them.

For me it comes down to nostalgia. My 101 year old grandpa shot winchester his whole life pretty well. Rifles and shotguns. Wish he didn't sell almost all of them before I got into shooting and hunting. I'd take the winchester everyday if I could.

I will unfortunately likely have to go the Tikka way as well.. But If anyone knows where to find one of those 7-08 model 70 rifles please let me know! Hah.

Looking for a rifle a few years back, i had my mind set on a Tikka. The bolt was the slickes I have ever handled, well one of the slickest. Unfortunately, the only ones in stock locally had synthetic stock and felt cheap and front heavy (not well balanced)

I ended up with a couple of used mauser actions instead. I now have my mind set on getting a M70 supergrade, i have to handle one first and there are no local dealer that stock them. Time will tell...
