Seems Benelli has introduced their latest version of their Ethos shotgun ,in 28 gauge with a 3 inch chamber.Fiocchi will be making the 3 inch 28 gauge ammunition.

My guess is that in the near future non tox shot will have to be used every where. Some places in the States it is so already. At present steel shot is the cheapest non tox shot available.Steel shot leaves a lot to be desired. At the least, bigger shot to get the same weight as lead.In order to keep the 28 gauge as a viable gauge, to use in the field, a longer hull, that can hold a larger pay load is most likely going to be required.

I suppose it is much the same idea as the 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge hull.In order to get more steel payload, they had to go to a 3 1/2 inch hull.I can remember the old fellows saying about no need for a 3 inch 12 gauge hull and not too long ago, the debate over the 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge hull. Now just about all 12 gauge guns can shoot 3 inch shells and a good number of them 3 1/2 inch as well.

I hope you are wrong since it is going to take a lot of nice vintage 28ga guns out of the game. I may have one or two that can handles the pressures/ etc of steel

Just reading about it
Not content with just making its baby available in 28-gauge, though, Benelli upped the ante a bit. A partnership with Fiocchi has yielded the introduction of the industry's first 3-inch, 28-gauge load. Engineers say that the 3-inch shotshell can achieve the same velocity as a standard 2 3/4-inch, 28-gauge load but with a quarter-ounce more shot. The result is a 25 percent increase in knockdown power and 20 percent more pellets on target at 35 yards.

Upped the ante?? they say. We have been reloading 1oz in 28ga for years and years. I fact you would probally remember as I do the old federal 1oz factory shells plus winchester still sells them in super x no. 6
Sounds like marketing BS and no mention of steel shot compatable
Personally I have found with the 28ga if I cannot get whatever with 3/4oz an extra 1/4 made little difference

Its a sub guage...ffs. This is the shotgun equivalent of someone trying to brag that they hit 9 iron on the par 3, when the others in the group used 7's. If you need more than the 28 can give, then use a 20 or 12. Ammo for 28 and 410 is already nosebleed expensive; on the one hand....if more people use 28's perhaps ammo will come down, but i doubt any 3" load would be cheap. Pretty much anyone serious about 28's and 410 is going to reload.

For myself, I will continue to use the 28 gauge.I have no desire to use a 20 or a 12 gauge in the uplands. If a 3 inch shell is what it takes to do so,so be it.I dare say, it is the same idea as those hunting ducks, not wanting to go to a 10 gauge, so the 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge shell was introduced.

The 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 and Benelli Lagacy are steel shot compatible,so I am about positive the 28 gauge Benelli Ethos will be steel shot compatible as well.

About all one can hope for at present, is that lead stays legal for upland use.If not ,a 3 inch 28 gauge could help to save the gauge for field use.

This is the second time fiocchi has tried the 3 inch 28ga thing. A few European doubles including some berettas already have 3 inch chambers. They offered their Tundra line of non toxic in it for a bit, or at least said it would be offered.

I wish someone would load appropriate sized steel shot in the 28 and 410, something like 5s, for little ducks. I know of a few people using the #6 load winchester offers and it seems to do OK over decoys. He visited shot has a #4 load in their hevi stellar line.

The 3 inch 28 gauge Fiocchi shells were listed in, Fiocchi's 2010 catalogue. Both lead and Tundra 3 inch 28 gauge shells were listed.I wrote a letter to Fiocchi at the time asking about the 28 gauge 3 inch shells. They said at that time none were produced ,as the gun that was to be made to handle them was put on hold by Benelli/Beretta.

A few 28 gauge SXS and O/U shotguns have been made in the past, pre 2010, with 3 inch chambers.I have never been able to find out why, as no 3 inch 28 gauge shells were produced .

The longest 28 gauge shells that I know of ,that were produced, were 2 7/8 inches in length.

I played with bismuth and quite frankly it sucks, expensive and it's light like steel. It's a no win material especially in a sub gauge.

That is strange. I have never reloaded it in 28ga but did quite a bit when it first came out in 10ga and 16ga worked great for me other than it being too expensive
Once I caught on how to reload high speed steel it was not worth it any more
Cheers

Have used Bismuth in 12 gauge and I found it to be the best of the non tox shot I have used.Like Mac said, it is expensive, but for myself, bags birds as good as lead.
