Seems Benelli has introduced their latest version of their Ethos shotgun ,in 28 gauge with a 3 inch chamber.Fiocchi will be making the 3 inch 28 gauge ammunition.
My guess is that in the near future non tox shot will have to be used every where. Some places in the States it is so already. At present steel shot is the cheapest non tox shot available.Steel shot leaves a lot to be desired. At the least, bigger shot to get the same weight as lead.In order to keep the 28 gauge as a viable gauge, to use in the field, a longer hull, that can hold a larger pay load is most likely going to be required.
I suppose it is much the same idea as the 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge hull.In order to get more steel payload, they had to go to a 3 1/2 inch hull.I can remember the old fellows saying about no need for a 3 inch 12 gauge hull and not too long ago, the debate over the 3 1/2 inch 12 gauge hull. Now just about all 12 gauge guns can shoot 3 inch shells and a good number of them 3 1/2 inch as well.
This is the second time fiocchi has tried the 3 inch 28ga thing. A few European doubles including some berettas already have 3 inch chambers. They offered their Tundra line of non toxic in it for a bit, or at least said it would be offered.
I wish someone would load appropriate sized steel shot in the 28 and 410, something like 5s, for little ducks. I know of a few people using the #6 load winchester offers and it seems to do OK over decoys. He visited shot has a #4 load in their hevi stellar line.
I believe Rio has bismuth loads for the 28.
I played with bismuth and quite frankly it sucks, expensive and it's light like steel. It's a no win material especially in a sub gauge.
