Why would you use cat litter? What does that save you? $5/yr? It's not like the stuff is very expensive at the gun store.
I change out my media once every year or two, I just throw in a used dryer sheet once in a while to absorb the dirt and crud left behind and keep using it. Brass still comes out shiny.
Sorry, don't mean to sound like a jerk but some days it blows my mind how much hassle some people will go through just to save a dollar.
This is how I empty them but not sure how well it will work in your situation
Get one of the rotary media separators. They knock the media out of the insides.

If you ever decide to use stainless media, the same separator filled with water can be used.
I use stainless steel wet media, but decap the brass first. Cleans inside and out , plus the primer pockets.
X2 on wet tumbling. Makes dirty crusty brass like new.
I use a mix of untreated walnut, treated corn cob, and Lyman media polish now....cases come out mirror finished. Not sure it's necessary but they sure look purdy....lol
