Bought my first AR - NEA in 7.62x39

Got some news from NEA today. Upper has been repaired and tested, it will be on its way back to me soon. So far my experience with them has been good, the 2 guys I spoke to over the phone were apologetic and understanding - seems to be in line with their reputation for great customer service.

Failure was caused by a brittle barrel extension. They have replaced the following: barrel, barrel extension, bolt, cam pin, firing pin and latch on the charging handle.

I'm looking forward to getting it back, hopefully it's been repaired with better components! I'll post an update when I have it back.

Sounds about right. Some will likely still blame it on the ammo, rather than admit NEA screwed up though.

They're not replacing your bolt carrier or upper? You might want to check the notch in the upper where the charging handle latches for damage. If the force of the barrel extension ring coming back with the bolt ripped the claw off of your charging handle, the aluminum notch may be damaged as well.

Their customer service does do a good job though. I had some exchanges with them when they were replying late into the evening on a Sunday night.

I'm certainly not in the NEA hater parade but why the hell aren't they just giving you a complete new upper assembly? It's their f up. A brittle barrel extension who f@cking cares, it blew up in your face after one of their dealers dishonestly stuck you with it.

I would ask for a service report and test data that proves that the gun works and its not going to have another blow out when you get it back and shoot it.
after all you don't know if the carrier or upper has hairline cracks it is that could result in another blow out.
Unless all they did was swap parts and send it back to you.
Full test report by a qualified tech would be a good idea.
either that or #### can the whole upper and send u a new one just to be on the safe size.
new upper is cheaper then a law suite

Speaking of lawsuit.....

Yeah, idk how I'd feel about spending a grand on a rifle, have it blow up and then be told it has been "repaired".
The whole idea of not just giving someone a new upper at least is ridiculous in my mind.

He's just giving advice. What would NEA sue him for? It's not defamation if it's true.

The bolt carrier got slammed hard enough that the cam pin broke inside it. Like BBB said, there could be damage that isn't visible.

If I were the OP, the only original parts I'd be willing to take back would be the gas tube/block and the flash hider.

Not exactly a confidence inspiring move on their part

I would strongly recommend you get NEA to pay for an L.P.I. on the upper and lower and an MPI on the carrier. There is zero chance I would fire that rifle without those things being done. If the upper is cracked and the bolt or barrel extension lets go again you could end up eating a chunk of that rifle. Don't let NEA do the NDE themselves, take it to a place like TEAM industrial services and get a report made. If NEA refuses the NDE request then demand a new upper, lower and BCG. Good luck

Well then , when Wes gets back go speak with him and tell him you want a gen 2

Better yet, ask him to accept the rifle as a return, and buy an AR from Epps in .556, while you consider other methods of disposing of your surplus ammo. ;)
I'm sure he will take care of you.

I had no idea they were selling NEA, 2-3 years ago they were hesitant to sell them without a proven track record...

I have no clue what any of that testing means
