Yes, that recall on the Versa Max was when they first came out. That was many guns ago. I think there are a lot of satisfied owners since then who have bought them.
I have hunted waterfowl four years now with a Versa max , no issues at all. The best feature for me is that it shoots anything you feed it. Right down to 1oz light clay loads.
SX3 is also a fine gun. It maybe a matter of what feels good.

I'd buy 10 sx3 before I bought a versamax
I shoot trap with my SX3. Its a great gun, but it chucks the shells about 10 feet. Good thing the guys are good about it and stand a few feet back then move up to take their shot during 5 stand. At local trap events I always line up far right. If you plan on going to different clubs and shooting in their events you will need a shelf catcher. Otherwise its the better of the two guns you listed.
Thinking hard on the Versa Max waterfowl pro, also the Beretta A400, 4 on my buddies own the Versa max, they love it, was always a Remington fan for the shotguns, until i bought the Beretta A391 xtrema 2 with KO, loved it, regretted selling it, now looking for another one, love to get my hands on a A400 as well, tried the SX3, not too shabby, think the SX3 & the browning silver hunter took apart have all the same parts, anyways choose wisely.
Versa Max is becoming more and more popular with water fowlers, I know at least six guys using them, all with great success. These are hard core hunters that shoot a lot of shells in a season. One guy in our group shot his VM all season without a tear down cleaning, just to see if it would fail. It worked flawlessly ,all season. I am seeing more of them show up to shoot sporting clay , as they will shoot very light loads with no problems.
That being said, shotguns are a personal thing, fit, and feel of the gun, are very important. This is comparing two guns that are both very good. Fit up and feel might be the tie breaker

So that makes it a good gun??? Abuse the crap out of it and because it still works all is good
I must be getting real old or just cannot understand some gun owners today

Some people like to test the waters. I went a full hunting season with my SBE II while it was under warranty without a cleaning.
Nice to know it can be relied on even it terrible conditions. Makes me shoot with more confidence knowing it will always go bang atleast. Lol
Some people take care of their stuff others do not . But hey to each their own.
I clean my guns after even one shot before they are put away. Always have always willMust be why I still have my first new shotgun bought in 1965, my first car bought in 1973, my first snowblower bought in 1985 , etc etc all still working just fine

I would think it makes it a better gun than if he abused the #### out of it and it failed. I don't promote this , however as a test it does have some validity. They do it with cars all the time
One can destroy anything even the finest of guns and cars if they abuse it enough. I don't understand your logic

The manufacturer should be doing the tests at the design stages not after it hits the market IMO. Just just cannot see one paying one to two grand for a shotgun and testing it to see just how tough it is or how dirty it can get before it starts screwing up
