Opinions on Ruger American , Savage 11 or Axis

Definitely don't count out the Weatherby Vanguard, every so often you can catch them on sale and great a great deal. They are a great rifle and extremely accurate.

They seem to be more accurate on some online forums than in real life....from my experience anyways. :)

Well after tonight visiting Canadian Tire tonight the AXIS is out for sure. The bolt on the Ruger is so much smoother & just feels to be a better gun. The stock is a little rough around the edges in places but still better than the Savage.
Hope to have hands on a Savage 11 tomorrow night. The Hog Hunter I tried felt nice for sure.

I will look into the Weatherby Vanguard as well.

This one on EE would be ideal!!! Hogue stock & muzzle brake make it my ideal gun! If only I could afford it. lol

Unless you find an "old stock" Vanguard it will be quite a bit above the price range of the others you are looking at - yes, there was some of the flame camo models sold of uber-cheap by one of the chain stores recently, but a "regular" Vanguard II synthetic will be on most shelves in the 600 to 700 buck range without glass or bases.

I own four of them and they are accurate and the machine work on them is nice, they have a two stage trigger etc, but I find it tough to put them in the same class, at least as far as price goes, with the other mentioned rifles. I personally believe that they are the best "value" for dollars spent, but sometimes what's in your budget or what feels right has nothing to do with "value to cost". Only you can decide if you see 300 bucks "more rifle" between one or another.

You can get an American with a factory mounted Redfield scope for the price of a bare Vanguard II. A model 11/111 with a synthetic stock can go for 200 to 300 bucks less than a Vanguard - just not in the same price class. You can get a model 11 with the Boyd's thumbhole stock (factory installed and sold that way) for the cost of a synthetic Vanguard, so just be prepared for the "sticker price" if you look at one.

All of the mentioned rifles will shoot MOA with off the shelf ammo, so what you are really buying is "how well it fits you", "how it feels when you shoulder it" and if you can tolerate or like the trigger, stock, feel of the bolt etc, because all of them will drop whatever you shoot at if you do your part.

I own an Axis because for what I wanted that rifle for it suited my needs perfectly - it allowed me to own a caliber that I probably would have done without because I don't have an endless supply of cash :) Yes, the bolt is a little sloppy, the stock sucks, the trigger needed almost two fingers to pull it before I worked on the spring, but I bought it because it was "cheap" it goes "boom" and it IS wicked accurate. But if you plan on buying one and swapping the trigger and swapping the stock you may as well spend the extra bucks up front and just move up to a more refined model.

The axis is a great platform. Nice stiff action. Bolt feels wobbly until it locks up, exactly as it's supposed to be. By cutting cost saving corners savage actually built a rugged simple design. Don't get the scope combo though. Lots of after market goodies if you wanna build. Light, quick handling, cheap. Oh and the ejection port is larger than the American and others. If you ever get a jam you can fit your fingers in there. Available with open sights. Baurarms is supposed to produce aftermarket 10rnd mags to boot. I'm liking to the rem 783 more and more also.

Lmao all guns are more accurate on the Internet. Too funny

As an entry level rifle, the Ruger American will be the overall better choice among the three specimens mentioned. Last year, I had an opportunity to shoot two and both shot quite tight groups @ 100 yards with inexpensive factory ammo - we were only looking for reasonable accuracy to remain consistently inside Whitetail vitals at that range. Target from one of those rifles .....

Found an new Axis with sights and redfield scope for $425. Good price but still jot sold on the axis yet.I think with taller scope rings i would like the Axis more. What is required to upgrade the trigger?

Trigger upgrade can be free or $100.00+
1) clip a half a coil off the trigger spring (free)
2) instal a small set screw and a pen spring ($8)
3) eBay softer trigger spring ($15 us)
4) best IMO rifle basix trigger ( $100 us)
5) buy the Axis II with the accu trigger and weaver scope.

All of the above improve the trigger immensely!
