Hey guys, just browsing youtube today and came across this:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw9JDpRgrKQ.

It looks really fun! Is there anywhere around that puts on such competitions? Anyone compete? Where and when and how do you like it?

My last range (CDTSA in Calgary) did a weekly steel shoot like this, but with centerfire handguns. I would love to do it with rimfire rifles and handguns but no one seemed interested there and I have moved away.

I really like the Steel Challenge matches also. I don't think there are a lot of places in Canada holding them from what I can find. Only a few mentions in the "Action Shooting Games" section.

I am slowly working on building some so I can have informal matches in the backyard, lots of plans on the internet. You only need 10" and 12" circles plus 18x24" rectangles, 4 of each, to set up stages as layed out here https://steelchallenge.com/steel-challenge-Rules-Home.php I'm just trying to decide on 3/8" or 1/2" mild steel plate. I don't want to pay extra for AR500 or some thing just to use thinner plates. I think 3/8" mild steel will stand up to unlimited rimfire rounds but I need to do some testing before spending any money.

3/8 mild steel should be fine, I used it for a while before moving to ar500. 22lr was fine but 223 went through. Im thinking along the same line as you. Only I wish I had a backyard I could set up in and leave it. I need to make mine mobile. Keep the replies coming. Anyone in saskatchewan or around interested (near regina). We should get together and give it a whirl this summer.

I talked with the guys from CSC and the guys who run the AR courses.
They just laughed when I asked about either just an AR course or even a rinfire course.
Some of us have no use for a pistol.
They are so set in their ways, they cant see outside of the box.
There is a huge rimfire fallowing, we just need someone to stand up and set something up.
As far as CSC, their egos are now in space.
They wont be seeing a dime from my friends and I again!!!!

I think there needs to be more of these style of events happening. Not to many rules except safety.

Would have a many more shooters competing.

We'd all love to be able to have the hardware and ammo to run in AR courses. Fact is it is expensive on all counts. Not everyone can play in the 'real deal' club. Even guys who own the AR hardware, how many can afford to go through 500rds of centerfire 223/5.56 2-3 times a month (especially with recent ammo prices)? I know many guys, including me, in this boat. Many can more easily afford 1500rds of 22lr a month though. Ammo cost is the biggest factor to participation. You can always sell your guns later, but ammo is consumable and when it is gone, it is gone.

I think if we could get 22lr run-n-gun, Steel Challenges, etc in rimfire, a WHOLE lot more people could get into the sport.
Lower cost hardware and lower cost ammo, this makes for many more shooters being able to afford this aspect of the hobby.
Rifle only would be good. Many do not have strong handgun skills, and would initially be more comfortable doing rifle only I think. Later they could move on to more serious, combined rifle/pistol shoots as they get more comfortable.

Some will stay at the rimfire level, and some of these participants would probably move on and graduate to the 'real deal' level too.
Some will play at both rimfire and 'real deal' level too, strictly due to ammo costs.
Win - win for all.

The more people we attract to ANY part of the firearms hobby, the better.
I hope organizers realize there IS a market for rimfire tactical, and take the opportunity to start it up and get it going.

Well said steiner. Im going to work on getting some scrap steel from work ( we are building a new multi billion dollar potash mine, there aught to be some scrap around) and start preparing for summer. If its ok with the land owner, ill start planning a course and post "fun" rimfire only shoots, some speed steel, maybe some marksmen distance shooting. Heck we could set up a corner with undertheguns 5 shot challenge going on. Bring our kids along to join in the fun! There is a lot of room where i shoot, the possibilities are endless!

Thanks guys.
Lang, wow...your off to a good start there!
If I was closer, I too would be there with some plate targets in hand!:)

langbanger: I'm at Grenfell and would love to get in on something like this. Our old club used to have great fun and always tried to stay back from having contests where only the favored few could compete. .22 rimfire can be loads of fun. Keep us up on what is going on.
