My only thought if you are thinking of doing this in the Lower Mainland, is that the 22 shot shells will be less effective than the 6 RCMP with C8's will be at shooting a Geologist.
At 10' "maybe"; at 30' never! That #12 shot is useless at any distance at all. Dave.
The .22 shot shells can be very effective rat shells at up to 30 ft. But there is a catch. You must shoot them form a smoothbore .22. I have a Remington target master single shot bolt. When I first started using it, after many years of farm pest control with standard .22's it really opened my eyes! The .22 shot cartridges used in a rifled barrel are novelty / noise status and only effective on sparrows and blackbirds up to 10-15 ft, My smoothbore is able to kill pigeons and rats cleanly at double that distance. Don't despair if you only have a standard .22 - you must be very close, but I have killed dozens of rats that way with a rifled bore.
#12 shot is far safer to shoot inside barns where a ricochet of even a .22 CB cap might break an electric wire or puncture a water line. The shells are actually called "rat shot" in some circles.

The suggestion that .22 rimfire shotshells are useless is a malicious and unfair characterization of their potential. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is better on the day you want to hunt butterflies.
A man who knows of what he speaks.
Rifled .22 bore and these things are beyond useless. The pattern is more like a donut, with a big gap in the middle.
Wonder if there is a an easy way to "fill" the rifling on an old .22 to create a quasi-smoothbore? There aren't many smoothbores around anymore!
CB's will put holes in things you don't want to have holes in...
It's more of a pest control question but will CCI .22LR shotshells kill a 6" long rat at 10-30'?
If .22LR cant kill a rat at 30yds,why was I carrying rimfire for a rabbit that sometimes stops 150-200 yds down in a deep snow...???
What i am missing here????
yup... even at 15' it is questionable... and rats are tough buggers

I gotta remember this one for another place and another time.
How's the butterfly hunting in the Hudsons Bay Area?
Bag limit?
