After a very long, but completely worthwhile wait, I'm proud to be able to share with you guys my non-restricted SSD STG 44 (BD44) ;)

Gun was rebarreled and thus converted to non-restricted, and runs like a dream. Minimal recoil, no muzzle climb, and very comfortable to hold and shoot. For the first deliberately issued and intentionally developed rifle of its kind it's a pure work of genius.

This' only a teaser as I haven't had the time to edit together a proper shooting video. Working on a better video with more discussion and shooting :d Also, mags are pinned too high so stuck with 4 rounds/mag in order to insert on a closed bolt. Ammo is handloads, however the gun seems pretty happy to run on just about any load.

Since it's been asked - work was done by Bits of Pieces in Vancouver.

I think I talked to you at the Edmonton Gunshow about your conversion a couple months ago...

If you find some time. I would love a PM on who you used for the conversion. I need to hunt deer with my BD44!

BTW: VERY COOL!

PM Inbound. I believe we did - I'm still hunting for a bolt and bolt carrier group if you hear of one :p

I've been thinking the same thing with deer hunting. That or varmints. If I ever come across a ZF4 base, mounts and scope I'll probably set it up for that. Who knows - with these cheap digital NV scopes could even make a mock-Vampir :D

We need to get out to the Range :)

Glad to any time :) No sense in having a gun you can't shoot :p Would be fun to do a rare gun day - get the mg-34's, stg's, 1919's and lugers and rare bolt guns and all the rest out at once. Would make for a heck of a range day :)

Why don't they sell these?? :)

Marstar does, just need to get the barrel swapped! Seems they sometimes have problems, but from a lot of digging it really sounds like the problems came from the US guns since they needed in-US produced parts that were often not properly heat treated.

I'd hate to ask how much that cost. I'm envious.

It actually wasn't bad at all - the old saying of "You can have something done well, fast, and cheaply, but only two of the three" applies here. I chose done well and cheaply, so it really only cost time. Now that mine has been figured out that time will probably decrease as well.

Is that you in the video? Nice gun handling!

No, but I'll let her know. She's knows her stuff :d

Since its non restricted, you know where we can go anytime. I just need to plow into the range. Its good except for the last 100 yards so far. I'm likely going next weekend :)

Love that gun!! I have the .22LR version.

Is it possible to get one in a calibre such as 7.62x39, or is the 8mm Kurz magwell too short? I only ask because I'd love to have (another) one in a calibre that's easier to find (and most likely a hell of a lot cheaper!).

Not really - the mags, mag well, and most of the action is exactly long enough for the 8mm kurz cartridge. That said, as long as you are shooting commercial or handloading the price is the same as shooting every other cartridge of that size, and it's still commercially available. SSD was dedicated to a very close historical copy so didn't make sense to overhaul the whole design for a different cartridge. Plus if you're spending this kind of money on a gun , a difference in .50c a round isn't really a factor. With a 1:10 twist it shoots 150gr well as well as the historically accurate 125gr bullets, just have to seat deeper to get the 150gr bullets at the correct overall length. I'm hoping to do a proper review and better video in the next couple of weeks as well - there's a lot to these guns and it's always fun to share the experience!

If these came in 7.62 x 39 I'd buy 5........it would be amazing if a company came out with a conversion kit for these

Care to share how much? Meaning do I have to win next Friday's LottoMax to afford one lol?

OP I salute you sir, there is so many good things going on in the initial post and vid
1. Great idea to bring the Stg44 into the land of NR
2. doing 1. above
3. producing a nice straight forward Youtube clip showing the rifle functioning, and rather well at that. Not all shaking about and crazy metal head banger music blaring away.
4. young person at a range and
5. semi related to 4. a young lady competently, safely and comfortably handling the rifle.
