Anywhere to buy .577 Snider Loaded Ammo and/or Bullets?

I recently acquired a .577 Snider Enfield (Mk. II*) and would like to shoot it. I've been researching how to source ammunition for it since I'm COMPLETELY NEW to this and I have no experience or equipment for reloading. I know what you're going to say: "Should have just bought a Mosin, dummy." I know, but the Snider Enfield has sentimental value and I'd really like to be able to shoot it. In an ideal world, I would like to find someone from whom I can purchase some loaded cartridges that are ready to shoot. I know my chances are slim, but does anyone know of any suppliers in Canada that sell loaded Snider ammo?

In the likely chance that I need to load my own ammo, I'll have to find suppliers for the necessary parts. It looks like I can get a Lee press and dies for .577 without too much trouble, and black powder and primers are available all over the place. I can find at least one Canadian supplier of .577 brass online, and it sounds like I can order 24 gauge shotgun brass from the USA and cut it down to size myself if I have to, so that's no problem. Where I run into a snag is with the bullets. This is the only antique I'll be shooting so I really don't want to get to the point where I'm melting lead and molding my own bullets. However, there doesn't seem to be anyone in Canada who sells these bullets, or at least not that I can find online. I've read through a bunch of threads about reloading .577 Snider on this board and everyone seems to be molding their own bullets. So I was wondering if anyone knows where I can buy these bullets in Canada, or what the legality is of purchasing them in the USA and bringing them back (I know exporting bullets is illegal under ITAR, but are there exceptions for antiquated calibers or anything like that?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if someone knows where I can just buy pre-made cartridges that would be amazing. I'm located in Kingston, Ontario if that makes a difference.

Have you checked out any of the banner sponsors such as TEC Canada???

Those folks pay for this site and you should really look to see what they have to offer. Tradex did have 577/450 brass. They may no longer have it in stock. Your next best bet is to do a Google search for Bertram Cartridge cases out of Australia.

I just did a search. They no longer have them.

If you are interested, Del Selin's who advertises here off and on makes up a neat little insert out of steel to fit the 577/450 chamber. These inserts allow you to use relatively cheap and abundant 45 Long Colt cartridges. Lighter bullets and recoil but with relatively close velocities. 250-545-6413 9-5 Tuesday to Saturday Pacific time. Good folks to deal with.

There's a good article in Rifle's Handloader magazine December 15 issue on reloading the 577 snider. You should be able to find a back issue at your local gun store. If you can't let me know and i'll see if i can scan the article and e mail it to you.

I got 24 guage hulls from Rusty Woods in bc last week. Loaded ten up and shot them over the weekend. Worked great cheap and easy to do. Give them a call.
I used 58 cal ball, 50grains of ffg and cream of wheat as a spacer between the ball and powder. I don't know that I would reuse the hulls but they are so cheap I don't think I would bother. Lots of fun

I have seen ammo and bullets at Orangeville gun show. There's a guy at back wall from the entrance always sells a few at a time. I also seen few rounds at the Ancaster Show last time.

Thanks for all the tips everyone! I called the Shooters Den in Sudbury and he sells the ammo, and he attends the Orangeville gun shows (the next one is in a month) so I'll probably go through him.

also the CGN member Jethunter makes cast bullets for many calibers and sells them for decent prices. You may be served well by talking to him.

Here in UK only one person casts Snider bullets, and they are really only Miniés, not the short, flat-base correct-style Snider bullets. He also charges $36 for forty-eight, and $18 shipping.

Luckily, I still have around 150 cases - mostly Bertam Brass and NDFS, as well as twenty genuine Eley-Kynoch...I intend to use 24g wads in my loads - anyone else tried that?

I have a mould for the Snider, it is the short flat-base correct-style Snider bullets.
It's a .600-480 made by Accurate, nice looking little chubby bullets , if you are coming to the Orangeville show i could help you out with some for you to try.
Victor.

Victor - that's a very kind offer. Right now I'm in UK until 18 March and coming back here on 2 April - how does that fit in with the gun show?

Edit - it's March 6th....:(

Does the shooters den have a website? I could not find it. How much was he asking for the ammo?

I'm not sure how well that would work in a snider.....just saying. SJ
