9mm 1911s: SAM vs. Norinco

I have 2 pals that just bought Norinco 1911s. One in .45 and one in 9mm. Unbeatable for the price $350. One is blue and the other a Stainless type finish. Norinco has continued to get better and better every year. If I didn't already own an expensive Kimber .45. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Norinco. I do have a Norinco AR 15 copy and it works flawlessly and very happy with it. Not sure about SAMs. Apparently the steel used in Norinco frames and slides is so good that some Custom Pistolsmiths are now specifying Norinco frames and slides for their custom pistols.

I saw a 9mm Norinco today, next to their .45. I noticed a definite difference in that the stainless 9mm was heavier. I don't know it it's a thicker barrel in the 9mm or that the stainless is denser than the regular steel. Still, it definitely seemed worth the $392.

Why buy a 9mm 1911? Just get a browning hi power

If nothing else, I just bought 1,000 9mm for $279. And it shoots softer and holds more rounds. I also played with a .22LR Sig-Sauer 1911. About the same price as a SAM and nice and light. But big for my hand...perhaps the grips were thicker?

I bought 3 of the Norc 9mms two years ago. All 3 shot huge groups. 2 got new after market barrels and now they shoot very well. The 3rd got a 7.62x25 barrel.

I don't have a SAM 9mm, but I have a pair of SAMs in 45. They shoot well and are very well finished.

If I was buying a 9mm, I would buy a SAM. For 45, I have had great luck with Norcs.

I'm looking for range gun that isn't too pricey. 9 mm to keep the cost of ammo down, and a 1911. I may want to matching .22 LR to go with it.

How does the Norinco and the SAM compare? I hear the SAM is fairly good quality for the money. I'd like to get into some kind of competitive shooting sports in the future, so if the gun could be upgraded for IDAP or other competition, that would be great.

I'm hoping to spend under $600 for the 9, $450 for the .22.

Or other suggestions?

I bought a Norinco in 9mm earlier this year and have shot 1000+ through it with no issues at all. Fun and inexpensive.

i have the Norinco 1911 in 9mm,excellent gun, shoots great, and pretty accurate,,but if you want a really nice 9mm in the 1911 style,,find a nice used older Browning High-Power,they are hard to beat,,i have 2 and they are the best fitting 9mm i have had,you could find one sometimes for about 6 to 7 hundred..

I completely agree. I used to own a Spartan. Bought it used for $600. I should not have sold it. Those are very nice and accurate. I used to own Norcs. They work great but once you put a few thousand rounds through them they show signs of wear due to their poor fitting.

A guy ,handlenamed, jaycarver just posted his Spartan 9 mil for sale.
You can look up his posting if you wish to get one. His price is a bit over your mark, but seem to have done some upgrades.

There is no comparison, SAM is better build quality in all respects. However, if you want a cheap 1911 that shoots and lets you modify or play with, go for the Norinco. I've owned both.
