Robert Chombart (although not exactly an objective Frenchman) was involved in several rifle designs, modifications etc (including the RPA) for Bisley -- he certainly knew a thing or two about what made rifles accurate at long ranges; he was unequivocal that the MAS 36 was the basis for the best sniping/target rifle in service use. He particularly thought that the 45 degree lug engagement was a design feature that minimized dispersion with factory loaded ammunition. I found that pretty interesting! Course the French also gave us the Citroen and the Renault Dauphine ! two extremes in technology!
