If you thought 2011 was a good year hold on....... ;)

My job isn't exactly traditional, and two weeks ago I get a call from work "You can go to NZ but the trip has to be booked in the next 4h or its off". So in 2h I'm booked for work and in 6h I'm booked for hunting. :d:d:d

I've always had this crazy notion that I would have the time and money to hunt every species of wild goat but never expected to get much farther than BCs majestic white beast. Well, now things are looking up! I spent the first week training to take the edge off my knees and limber up then got sick and spent 4 days flat out with a fever. Good news is, I'm lighter than I was before so there is less to carry up the mountain! Tomorrow I head to the airport at first light, work for 5 days, hunt for 5 days and return on the 17th.

Anybody hunted these beasts? I have a guide so he will know the area, but I'm always open to tricks and tips.
Exciting!

Good luck!,
No help here, but Meat Eater Season 2 ep. 6-7 is exactly the hunt you're going on.

I've hunted tahr on public land (with a guide) SW of Christchurch. Watch out for spear grass. It's pretty tough stuff. Will punch through roper gloves and goretex pants. The area I hunted had some crevasse type features that I wasn't used to. The shrubs/veg in the subalpine can be pretty thick to work you're way through, thicker than what I've experienced in Alberta but probably on par with BC goat country.

It was fun and I'd hunt public land tahr in rugged country again. I did the hunt as a sideline thing for 4 days while my wife and I were on a honeymoon/vacation. She went for a train ride well I hunted :).

very cool post pics when you get back or it didn't happen you lucky SOB, good luck.

Oh it happened! ;)

I'm in an airport on hour 40 of getting home but will get my act, photos and notes together over the next couple days and do a full update. Short version: the hunting was awesome, we would see 30 tahr a day and over 4 days I shot two. The mountains were stunning, my guide was great and for a guy who lives at sea level we climbed high and hard every day with no real pain.
Highly recommended!
