Fun semi-auto .22 recommendations

Endless argument. Any reliable, and most are, semi .22 is a fun gun. It really just comes down to if you are going to leave it stock or modify it. Leave it stock and all the mentioned guns and a few more would be good choices. If you are going to have a desire to modify it then there is really only one good choice and one kind of maybe choice, 10/22 and 597.

Could be just luck, but I bought a Marlin model 60. The POS would not cycle 2 rounds in a row, brought it to a gunsmith, he put a new feed ramp on the breech, spent lots of time on it and told me it was a POS. He could not fix it.
I traded it for a 10/22.

If as some say the Ruger 10/22 is unreliable, then please explain why this rifle is the best selling semi auto .22 rim fire ever produced?

mine was unreliable, I had another it was fine, I would look one over before buying, the replacement I got, well the front sight was not put in the dovetail right, after a few rds it flew out, but those things happen..

Tanfoglio appeal....it may look like a toy,, but the toy works with everything i put in it,, no exception,, and it will pop the center out of a toonie at 25 metre anyday

Not sure if Wiki is the last word in accuracy, but other sources say the same, all on the internet. So we can take that with a grain of salt.

Thanks for clarifying that. I guess Marlin or is it Remington now??.:( have sold the most. Regardless, Ruger has sold a lot of 10/22s, they probably hold a firm 2nd place in numbers produced.

Let the puppies fight this one out and all get covered in poo. You and me, we can stay here on he porch and laugh at the lot of them for thinking it matters enough to argue over. :)

I ended up with a 10/22 because it was on sale really really cheap, and it happened to be in front of me when I felt the need, and had the money in hand. Despite aspirations to put a different barrel on it, it shot well enough that I have not mucked about with it at all. It gets used mercilessly, gets hosed out with a can of WD-40 at least once a year, whether it's filthy or just really dirty, and it looks like a truck gun.

Ayup. The eternal Ford/Chevy argument.

Best bet is to try a few different guns and run with the one that suits you best. Or that you have at the time. :) It's all good!

Cheers

but what is the best truck to haul the gun around?

My deluxe 1022 is from 1986 and has not had one single malfunction or failed part and has seen tens of thousands of rounds.

I couldn't recommend it enough for a fun plinker.

So I have a cz452 which I use for most of my plinking, usually at a friends house in the back yard. I love it, shoots great. However, the 452 is more for the serious business and I'd like something more fun to kick around. We play some shooting games that require speed, something I'm woefully at a disadvantage at with the 452 (I'm the only bolt action). So I'm looking for a a semi-auto that shoots fast and relatively accurately. I know the most common answer to this is the 10/22 and I'm keeping that option open. But as a relatively novice shooter I have a couple of questions on the 10/22 and how they stack up against the other semi-auto 22s on my list.

Here are my priorities, in order of importance:
- Fun to shoot
- Accurate
- Reliable
- Affordable (Don't want to break the bank but I'm flexible on price)

First, questions on the 10/22. I know it's the most versatile of semi .22s available but I'm not looking for a money pit. I don't mind spending a bit more to get it setup how I want and to do the basic mods (trigger etc...) but I'm not looking for an unending money pit. Once I get it the way I want I'll stick with it like that. Looking around the 10/22 in deluxe walnut stock looks great and if I didn't have the 452 I'd probably be all over it in a heartbeat. However, with the walnut 452 already in hand I was kind of thinking this might be the time to try tacticool :p Right now I'm pretty much on the fence on the idea as it would basically be spending money for a specific cosmetic style. At least that's how I see it. So here are the options I'm weighing, listed in highest to lowest cost (from where I can find them):

- CZ 512
- Anschütz MSR RX22
- A 10/22 in the some black stock still-to-be-determined (Buy 10/22 used on EE and drop into a custom stock)
- The 10/22 deluxe walnut stock

So questions:

1) Will the custom stocks affect accuracy much? Just curious about the cheaper plastic ones and how'd they'd perform vs the stock walnut.
2) How does the 10/22 stack up vs the 512 and the RX22? I'm thinking the price on the 512 and the RX22 might be overkill for what I'm looking for.

The gun would be used from all positions and would primarily be for kicks.

There's one RX22 on EE now....price reduced.
