So I think I want a Skorpion....

Have a Zastava M84 Skorpion in .32. Love it, not a fan of CSA after having a VZ in 556 that had issues, I know it's apples and oranges but still...The M84 has steel mags and is more "true to the original" than the CSA IMHO. Comes down to personal preference.

Basically the term "auto pistol" was its undoing, CSA markets this as a rifle, and built from scratch as a semi auto. In layman's terms this is basically comparing a military m16 (FA Prohib) to an AR 15 (SA Restricted)

So the CSA one is a restricted rifle and the VZ one is a prohib pistol? Just trying to make sure I have it understood right.

And, as a different interesting question, for magazines. The VZ-61 "auto pistol" magazines can be 10 rds because it's a pistol, but the CSA ones can only be 5 rds because it's a rifle, but the two are interchangable, so you could use VZ "pistol" magazines in a CSA "rifle" and be ok?

I have both and I prefer the .32 bcos the quick wire stock removal, .380 is permanent.

also my .32 came with the reducer, useless for semi but needed in auto version.

but the two are interchangable, so you could use VZ "pistol" magazines in a CSA "rifle" and be ok?

not really, altho the mag will fit each other, a 380 ammo will not work in a 32 mag.

What I find confusing is that SOR/98-462 under Part 1 - Prohibited Firearms, number 40 says:

"The firearm of the design commonly known as the Skorpion Auto Pistol, and any variant or modified version of it."

and here's a link to see what I'm talking about:

http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-462/page-2.html#h-4

Can anyone shed some light on the apparent contradiction? did 98-462 get repealed or changed ? The gov't site says it's up to date. Are there 2 totally different things called "skorpion" ?

It's a bit of a mindf**k to explain. It comes down to what existed first. The original military design was made as a submachine gun with a stock (i.e. a rifle). The prohibited list clearly states Skorpion "pistol", and any variants. However, since the rifle existed first, it cannot be a variant of the pistol. The pistol is the variant of it. So therefore, we can own it in rifle form, but not pistol.

This also works regarding another couple of examples off the top of my head: the B&T TP-9 rifle vs. the Steyr SPP, and the M1 carbine vs. the Iver Johnson Enforcer and Plainfield Super Enforcer.

I had a Zastava. Nice little unit. Got ammo at TradeEx, seemed like a decent price at the time for 1200 rounds, can't recall what ut was. I found it was too short to shoulder myself, and I'm not a tall/lanky guy. Fun unit all the same, but I did end up selling it to get a 7.62 7" AR to fill the gap. Sold mine with 1000 rounds for 600, fella got a deal! haha

They are coming in with new manufactured semi auto only lowers and are not classified as a pistol. So 5 round mags only.

Would they just so happen to fit Scorpion Pistol mags by strange chance? lol Maybe site sponsors can import them and pin them to 10 this way?

but your going to run into the 'commonaly available' issue. Is the prohibited Scorpian Pistol commonly available?

if it were then bringing in mags for it would be easy.

and the Lab now seems to be following the linage for varients a bit better, as seen by the ruling that the AR10 procedes the AR15 so anything that is a varient of the AR10 is not automatically restricted as a varient of the AR15, and the type 81 being an SKS varient and not prohibited as an AK varient.

The rifle design came first. Then the pistol version.

The pistol version is prohibited.

The rifle is not prohibited as a variant as it came first, and an older design isn't a variant of a newer design.

If the oic said skorpion firearm we wouldn't have them, but they said skorpion pistol in the OIC so the rifle gets in.

Remove the stock, and your scorpion rifle becomes a handgun/pistol, and prohibited.

Just bought one in .380 due to local available ammo, transfer should be done in a day or two buuuuuut their not shipping for a few weeks since I don't want it left with my house sitter.

Are there Skopion pistols in Canada? Even being prohib, they're here, no? Look up the definition of "common" in the webster dictionary. Read that and tell me there are not more then a few prohib Skorp pistols still in Canada. Of course there are. Seriously, the brass might wanna be d*cks and make things hard by interpreting the law in their own way, but the law is the law. Scorpion pistols exist in Canada and are not un-common (10 round mags, please?).

And speaking of interpretation; anyone remember the ANTIQUE STATUS fiasco with converted caliber antiques?? They won't give letters for converted caliber antiques ANYMORE, but the law is still the law, and whether they lab wants to de-register and/or issue a ANTIQUE STATUS letter or not, for example, a pre 1898 COLT SAA 45 colt converted to 38 Special is an antique, regardless if the lab de-registers or not, or whether the lab acknowledges it or not.

Push for more or loose more. If you're not moving forward you're moving backwards. There are no stand stills when it comes to gun control.

Nope, there are NO Skorpion "pistols" at all in Canada. Anything listed under Prohibited Weapons Order# 11, part of Kim Campbell's Bill C-17, was prohibited without a provision for grandfathering, so owners were forced to turn any they had in or else face criminal charges. And they weren't compensated for them either.

I didn't know this. I thought they would be grandfathered in AT LEAST. Seriously, messed up. SMH
